Cleethorpes celebrate causing cup upset

Tuesday night`s Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round replays produced a couple of `upsets` but, in the main, it was quite a good evening for clubs in the Pitching In Southern Football League.

The surprises came at Wimborne and Cockrams, where Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) Premier sides Hamworthy United and Shaftesbury respectively knocked out Premier Division South Merthyr Town and Division One South club Highworth Town, and at the Myenergi Stadium where Northern Premier Division One East outfit Cleethorpes Town completed the task of disposing of unbeaten Premier Division Central club Hednesford Town.

Hamworthy, playing at Wimborne, scored two second half goals from Lee Francis and Jamie Beasley to see off the Martyrs.

At Shaftesbury, Highworth actually took the lead after 7 minutes with a header from Liam Haines.

However, the lead was short lived as Ashley Pope levelled just 4 minutes later.

The hosts went ahead in rather fortunate fashion just before half-time when a shot from Pope took a big deflection before looping over `keeper Connor Thompson.

Highworth equalised immediately after the restart through Rhys Wells, but Asa Phillips headed Shaftesbury back in front just shy of the hour-mark.

The visitors were handed another blow shortly afterwards when Dan Comer was dismissed for an alleged stamp and they conceded a fourth goal in the 85th minute with another header, this time from Cameron Beard.

It will be Cleethorpes who visit Vanarama National League North side Alfreton Town in the next round after they completed a 2-1 win over Hednesford.

Due to a traffic delay on the M18, kick-off was delayed until 8pm and, like Highworth, it was the Pitmen who took the lead with a goal from Andre Landell after 32 minutes.

But 7 minutes after the break, Tim Lowe pulled the Owls back on level terms.

And then seconds after Hednesford had hit a post, Cleethorpes took the lead on 65 minutes with a header from Oli Donald.

The home side held on to that lead to win through to the Second Qualifying Round.

Bowing out to outside opponents on Tuesday – and both in home replays against Isthmian League Premier Division opposition - were Division One Central sides Barton Rovers and Thame United.

Rovers suffered a 4-1 defeat at Sharpenhoe Road to Hornchurch, who raced into a 2-0 lead with two goals in 2 minutes midway through the first half from prolific marksman Sam Higgins.

Bradley Bell reduced the deficit from the penalty spot after 39 minutes, but 10 minutes after the break, Higgins completed his hat-trick and then 6 minutes after that, sub Charlie Ruff added a fourth.

There was a hat-trick hero at The ASM Stadium where Thame were beaten 4-2 by Margate.

Former Maidstone United and Herne Bay striker Jake Embery proved to be the Kent outfit`s main man, putting them in front after 17 minutes.

Greg Hackett pulled the hosts back on level terms 6 minutes later, only for Lewis Knight to restore `Gate`s lead within 2 minutes.

Embery went on to complete his hat-trick either side of half-time to make it 4-1, with Ryan Blake pulled a second back for Mark West`s side 8 minutes from time.

Producing excellent away replay wins were Bedford Town, Weston-super-Mare, Rushall Olympic and Beaconsfield Town.

A crowd of 363 at the Frost Hire Stadium saw Division One Central side Bedford edge out Isthmian League North outfit Canvey Island by the odd goal in five.

A header from Rene Howe in the 36th minute gave the Eagles a lead they held until the break.

Seven minutes after the restart though, the Gulls were back on level terms through Matt Price.

Charley Sanders restored Bedford`s lead on 69 minutes, only for the hosts to respond quickly again as Price equalised within 2 minutes from the spot.

It looked like heading for extra-time until Howe popped up with the Eagles winner a minute into stoppage time.

A disputed goal 5 minutes from time earned Premier Division South club Weston a hard-earned victory against Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division hosts Flackwell Heath.

Nick McCootie`s goal following a free-kick was initially disallowed by the referee before he consulted one of his assistants and allowed the decisive goal to stand.

A crowd of 630 at Marston Road saw Premier Division Central club Rushall Olympic beat Northern Premier League Premier Division hosts Stafford Rangers 2-0.

The Pics took a 22nd-minute lead when Owen Parry was adjudged to have been brought down in the box and Danny Glover duly converted the resulting penalty.

And the visitors earned a trip to another NPL Premier Division outfit Buxton when Parry scored number two in the 65th minute.

Premier Division South club Beaconsfield will travel to National League South side Havant & Waterlooville in the next round after coming through a potentially tough test at Combined Counties League Premier Division side Walton & Hersham.

A crowd of 400 saw a hat-trick from the Rams` Scott Donnelly plus goals from Aaron Minhas and Tyrone Lewthwaite seal victory, with the Swans having Reece Brewster sent-off after 65 minutes with the scores level at 2-2 at the time.

Beaconsfield`s league rivals Chesham United also progressed when they saw off Isthmian League South Central side Uxbridge 2-1 at the Meadow.

Brad Clayton put the Generals in front after just 7 minutes, only for Tony Mendy to equalise from the spot 6 minutes later following a handball decision.

Clayton restored the home side`s lead around the half-hour mark – a lead they held, with the Reds` chances diminishing further 11 minutes from time when they had sub Ezra Ndukuba dismissed for an off-the-ball incident.

Division One Central club Welwyn Garden City also edged through their home replay against Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Mulbarton Wanderers.

Goals from Callum Taylor after 21 minutes and Jordan Watson a minute before the break had given Welwyn a comfortable lead but Ben Thompson halved the deficit in the second period to make for a nervy finale.
