AFC Sudbury Swoop for New Striker

Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central club AFC Sudbury have swooped to sign striker Joe Neal from Vanarama National League South side St Albans City for the 2023/24 season.

The 22-year-old impressed when he played against Sudbury twice last season in the Emirates FA Cup.

Neal started his career with Cambridge United, progressing through the academy age groups after being spotted as a 6-year-old, before making his debut in the EFL Trophy in November 2020.

He spent time on loan at Royston Town, Needham Market, St Neots Town and Biggleswade Town before being released by the Us in the summer of 2021, and joining the Waders.

In February 2022 he moved to St Albans.

AFC Sudbury manager Marc Abbott told his club’s website: "He's an excellent signing for us and has the ability to score goals. Having had previous experience at Needham Market and Biggleswade Town at Step 3, we feel as though Joe has the necessary qualities to score some important goals for us this season. But not only is he a goalscorer, his work ethic, endeavour and willingness to run will, I’m sure, be acknowledged by the fans. Joe spent the last season and a half at Step 2 side St Albans City where he featured more than 30 times last season."

Meanwhile, forward Romario Dunne has committed to the Yellows for the challenge of Step 3 football.

The 25-year-old joined Sudbury in August 2021 from National League South side Braintree Town but a serious knee injury hampered his progress.

He had joined the Iron in the summer of 2020 from Isthmian Premier side Brightlingsea Regent, who he had joined in June 2019.

He had an excellent 2018/19 season for Thurlow Nunn Premier side Hadleigh United after joining them from Stanway Rovers.

Originally with Brantham Athletic, his performances earned him Hadleigh`s players` and managers` player of the year awards.
