Right Response From Jones

Defender plays his part in commanding Hitchin Town win

There was action in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central on Monday evening as three second half goals gave Hitchin Town the points in a 3-0 triumph over Nuneaton Borough.

It was a particularly pleasing performance from Ciaren Jones. The 23 year-old defender scored an own goal and was at fault for the second in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Redditch United, but responded in the best possible way by putting in an impressive display against Boro.

“After Saturday, my mind was extra focussed,” he admitted. “I know that my mistakes cost us three points at the weekend, so it was pleasing that I was able to make a contribution to Monday’s win.

“The whole team did well and in the end it was a convincing victory for us. The first half was a case of both teams feeling each other out; you always have to be wary of the threat that Nuneaton have but we felt at half-time that we had done well and we knew that if we kept pressing them, the chances would come, and so it proved.

“We took our goals well and, as I say, it was comfortable in the end. Now we have to take this on to Saturday against AFC Sudbury in the Emirates FA Cup.

“We’re treating every game like a Cup Final, so it will be nice if we can make progress in this competition and get another win under our belts.”
