LEISTON | SPOT ON SAM

Eventful game for Blues' 'keeper Donkin

To say that Saturday’s Isuzu FA Trophy tie against Hornchurch was eventful for Leiston goalkeeper, Sam Donkin, would be something of an understatement.

With the scoreline finely balanced at 1-1 going into stoppage time at the end, the 26 year-old saved a penalty to take the tie into a penalty shoot-out which they eventually won 9-8 with Donkin scoring his spot-kick and then saving Hornchurch’s ninth to see his side through.

“It was a hard game against in-form opponents,” Donkin told his club’s media at the end. “We had to dig deep to get through, but the boys are buzzing to be in the next round.

“It’s always difficult taking a penalty so late in the game, especially with the score as it was, so I just stood up tall and thankfully I was able to make the save to help the team out.

“The shoot-out went all the way and I was just pleased to be able to make a contribution and play my part in getting us into the next round.”

The Blues are looking to push on up the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central table having made the play-offs last season. They have won just three of their opening 11 League games.
