Emerging front-runner, Finley Wilkinson, chose the perfect time to get his first senior hat-trick as his second half treble saw Hitchin Town overturn a 3-1 half-time deficit to beat Coalville Town 4-3 at the weekend.
The 20 year-old has been a regular on the scoresheet this season as the Canaries sit sixth in the table with six wins from their 11 Pitching In Southern League Premier Central games so far.
“We actually started the game okay, but then conceded three really sloppy goals,” Wilkinson told The Non-League Show. “The management let us know in no uncertain terms that it was not good enough during the half-time interval.
“We were able to come out for the second half and show a reaction. I managed to get a goal back within the opening ten minutes or so of the half and it gave us the momentum to go on and turn the scoreline around.
“My favourite goal was my second where I turned my marker near the half-way line and then was able to run at the defence.
“We also had that bit of good fortune towards the end to go on and win it, but we deserved it with how hard we worked.
“It was amazing to complete the comeback and for me to get a hat-trick in front of my family and friends, is a great memory.
“I’m really enjoying my football here. When I first arrived last season, I didn’t know anyone but I was able to settle in pretty quickly and whilst our fortunes as a team were a bit up and down, we’ve now got that continuity and it’s started to show this season.
“The confidence is high amongst the lads and the feeling is that we can have a successful season and remain in and around the play-off places.”
Hitchin Town hit the road on Saturday as they head to Bromsgrove Sporting.
