Generals secure place in Emirates FA Cup first round proper

Chesham United will join Bracknell Town in flying the flag for the Pitching In Southern League in the first round proper of the Emirates FA Cup after they secured a dramatic extra-time victory over higher level Braintree Town on Tuesday evening.

It sets them up with a home tie against another opponent from the Vanarama National League South, Maidstone United, at the beginning of November.

“We’re all absolutely buzzing,” said the Generals’ joint manager, Michael Murray. “The boys left everything out there on the pitch for this football club and I couldn’t be more proud of them.

“Everyone played their part and were outstanding over the course of the two games. We got amongst them a bit more in Tuesday’s replay and showed more energy and legs.

“It was a sucker-punch for us to concede just before half-time, we didn’t feel that we deserved it, but what character from the lads to stick at it and go on to get through.

“We thoroughly deserved it. It was important to stay calm going into extra-time; we were focussed on the task in hand and even though we were forced to change our shape a couple of times, we got the job done and that is a credit to everyone.

“The fans were also outstanding and fully played their part. They turned up in good numbers and really got behind us from start to finish.

“We’ll enjoy the win, but we have to prepare properly for what is an important League game on Saturday against Poole Town.”

Chesham have lost just one of their 11 Pitching In Southern League Premier South games so far this season.
