Committed defender playing his part in impressive run of form

During a long association with Rushall Olympic, which spanned well over 300 games, Sam Whittall became known as Superman Sam for his total commitment to the cause and resolute, never-say-die defensive qualities.

He was a key figure in The Pics’ team that created history at the end of last season by securing promotion from the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central via the play-offs to bring Step 2 football to Dales Lane for the first ever time.

The demands of the higher level, more so off the field than on it, meant that he made the switch to hometown club, AFC Telford United, earlier in the season and already he has earned the Superman tag following a string of solid displays that have played a major role in a good run of form for The Bucks that has seen them go eight games unbeaten and thrust them into fourth place in the Premier Central table.

“I was made to feel really welcome here and because of that I was able to settle in quickly,” he told us. “It has been reflected in my performances, which have been consistent and to a very high level so far.

“Having gained plenty of experience of this level in recent years with Rushall Olympic, I know exactly what is required.

“From what I have seen so far, it’s just as competitive this season as it was last year and for a number of years prior to that.

“There are a number of teams that could go on and win it. The run-in will be extremely competitive, so that is something I am relishing during the second half of the season.

“Hopefully I can maintain a consistent level of performance; I’ve set some high standards since I have been here and I’ll be looking to continue in this vein to help the team as much as I can.

“AFC Telford are a big club; things have started to click into place now after a slow start and we have to make sure that we can maintain our position within the leading pack.

“As a team we are playing really well at the moment. There’s plenty of quality within the squad and this combined with the support that we receive will stand us in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead.

“Our momentum is building all of the time and it’s great to be part of it.”
