PITCHING IN SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER CENTRAL | BOXING DAY REVIEW

Mickleover back in top spot

The Boxing Day action in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central saw Mickleover take advantage of Needham Market being without a game to leapfrog them back to the top of the table courtesy of a 5-1 victory over bottom of the table, Long Eaton United.

It was the visitors who took the lead through Jack Rogers but Ethan Mann levelled things up going into the second half where the home side were able to turn the screw with Marcus Barnes putting them in front for the first time on the hour-mark.

Just three minutes later, Oliver Greaves extended their lead before Barnes and Mann both weighed in with their second goals of the game to add gloss to the scoreline.

There was a dramatic ended at Stratford Town as they drew 2-2 with third-place Leamington. A goal from Callum Ebanks towards the end of the opening period put The Bards in front and it was a lead they held until stoppage time at the end.

Firstly, Callum Stewart equalised only for Devonn O’Sullivan to put the hosts back in front four minutes into added time. That wasn’t the end of it as Stewart rescued a point with 96 minutes on the clock.

It’s now 12 League games unbeaten for AFC Telford United as they came home from Halesowen Town with a deserved success from a 2-0 triumph as first half strikes from Reece Styche and Remi Walker did the damage.

Also tucked in amongst the top five are Redditch United who battled out a single-goal victory over Alvechurch thanks to Callum Rowe’s goal deep into first half stoppage time.

The biggest win of the day came at St. Ives Town who tore apart Kettering Town by six goals to nil. Benjamin Mensah set them on their way before Jonny Edwards doubled the lead just before the break. Edwards added another just after the hour-mark before Brandon Njoku hit a brace in a ten-minute spell. Myles Cowling completed the scoring late on.

Another side winning big were AFC Sudbury who inflicted more misery on Berkhamsted thanks to a 4-0 away win as all four goals came in the second half from Joe Neal, who converted from the spot, Adam Mills, who scored twice, and Reiss Oteng.

A first half effort from Joe Newell was enough to see Bromsgrove Sporting beat Stourbridge to edge them away from danger in the lower half of the table. It was the same scenario for Royston Town as they beat Hitchin Town thanks to a 19th minute goal with Kian Harness getting free of the shackles to secure the three points.

The day’s other game ended goalless between Barwell and Coalville Town.
