There are not many players who swap the Zimbabwe Premier League for the Pitching In Southern League Division One South, but that’s exactly what Calum English-Brown has done.
The 22 year-old is a technically-gifted wide-man who has impressed in his outings for Yate Town so far having joined the club last month and he was able to open his scoring account in last weekend’s commanding 3-0 victory over Bemerton Heath Hartlequins.
“I was actually born in Scotland, I hold an Irish passport and grew up in Zimbabwe,” he said. “I came over to England in December and I’m gradually finding my feet here.
“I’ve played all of my previous football in Zimbabwe, my previous club was Chicken Inn FC; it’s a similar level to what I have experienced here so far. It’s probably a bit more physical here and you get less time on the ball, but I am enjoying the challenge.
“The pitches and, of course, the weather is taking some getting used to, but I have been made to feel really welcome at Yate and I am looking forward to what the future holds in store.
“There is a very busy schedule of games but it’s good to be out there getting minutes under my belt and it was nice to score in the last game and help us to a good win over opponents who are amongst the leading pack.”
English-Brown is the cousin of Yate Town player, Milo Murgatroyd, and has a Strength and Conditioning qualification.
“I’ll need to use it to bulk myself up to be able to cope with the demands of English football,” he added with a smile.
Yate Town head to Mousehole on Saturday as they look to continue their recent impressive form.
