Newcastle United fans show their support for Premier South club

There was a boost to the usual numbers at Hanwell Town’s Pitching In Southern League Premier South clash with Hendon on Saturday as a group of almost 100 Newcastle United fans descended on The Powerday Stadium.

Hanwell Town has strong links with the north-east club as they were originally formed back in 1920 by a group of Geordies who were working nearby on the railways.

In a bid to give themselves something to do at the weekend, they formed a football club which adopted the famous black and white stripes and were nicknamed The Geordies.

The club eventually folded, but were reformed in 1948 and kept the same colours and nickname as a nod to their roots.

“We've opened our doors to Newcastle United fans travelling down to the capital on numerous occasions,” said Hanwell Town FC Marketing Manager, Elsa Jones. “We have also partnered up with the Newcastle United Supporters Club London - The London Mags, whom we play an annual Geordie Cup match where fans from both teams fight it out for the Trophy!

“With us being at home on Saturday and Newcastle playing at Fulham later in the evening in the Emirates FA Cup, it presented us with the ideal opportunity to welcome some Newcastle fans on their way to the game.

“A great day was had by all; we were able sell extra food, drink and merchandise, which is so important for clubs like ours, and the only disappointment was that we couldn’t hold onto our two-goal lead and had to settle for a draw in the end!”

As The Geordies look to pull themselves away from the lower reaches of the table, they head to Poole Town at the weekend.
