HITCHIN TOWN | CENTURY FOR SYME

Proud moment for reliable defender

It was rather appropriate that Toby Syme marked his 100th appearance for Hitchin Town last weekend with the kind of determined and committed display that has been the hallmark of his time at the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central club.

Sadly, the occasion ended in a single-goal defeat at the hands of Kettering Town as they lost for the sixth League game in a row, a run which has seen them drop from the play-off places into the middle of the table.

But for Syme, who was last season’s Manager’s Player of the Season, it was a proud moment.

“To have made 100 appearances for what is such a well-respected club not only locally but throughout the Southern League, is really special,” the former Norwich City youngster told us. “When I first arrived here as a 19 year-old in 2017, I certainly didn’t expect to reach this milestone, but I am now in my second spell so it has made it easier to reach this number of games.

“I am pleased with the progress that I have made this season; my aim was to push on from last season and get more consistency in my performance levels, which I feel that I have done.

“As a team we have proved what we are capable of in the first half of the season where we picked up some good results to sit in amongst the leading pack.

“Recently we have dropped in form but there is a real determination from everyone to turn this around again and finish the season strongly.

“There is a lot of quality across the division this season and a lot of teams battling it out at both ends of the table, which makes for quite an interesting run-in.

“From our point of view we need to start picking up points and keeping clean sheets again. Once we end this run of defeats, we’ll turn our form around and start moving back up the table again because we are a good side, we just need the extra confidence that comes with winning games.”

Hitchin head to Barwell on Saturday.
