CHESHAM UNITED | HARD(ING) EARNED

Front-man breaks duck with vital winner

Chesham United took another step towards the Pitching In Southern League Premier South title on Good Friday as they battled out a 1-0 victory over managerless Hayes & Yeading United.

It took a goal 20 minutes from time by James Harding – his first for the club – to secure a hard-earned win.

“It was a great feeling to see the ball hit the back of the net,” said Harding, who joined the Generals from League rivals, Salisbury, earlier this month. “Any striker will tell you that you want to get off the mark as soon as possible when you sign for a new club, but it makes it feel even better when it’s a small contribution to what these boys have achieved so far this season and ultimately towards the end goal.

“The race for the title and to make the play-offs has been interesting to say the least and there are sure to be plenty more twists and turns to come.

“We have a healthy lead at the moment, but the title race is far from over yet and as boring as it sounds, we just have to take things one game at a time.

“There are some very good teams in and around the leading pack and I can see the battle to make the play-offs going right down to the wire; both Chesham and Salisbury are two big clubs with great fan bases and good people behind-the-scenes.

“The standard of the Premier South has improved over the last few years, you can see that from the results as its rare that you see the leading teams walk over those near the bottom and more often than not, games are decided by fine margins, just as ours was on Friday against opponents who are battling to avoid the drop.”

April gets underway on Monday with a trip to another team in the lower reaches of the table, Harrow Borough, as the Generals face a final run-in of five games over the course of the month.

“The aim as a collective is to get over the line and win the title,” added Harding. “Personally, I want to contribute towards that by scoring as many goals as possible to help us win football matches.

“Now that my first goal is out of the way, hopefully more will follow.”

The Generals require just two points from their remaining five games to secure the Pitching In Southern League Premier South title.
