Late Poppies Goal Wins Top of the Table Clash

Weekend Review - Premier Central

The Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division Central` s match of the day was the top of the table clash at Amblecote between overnight leaders Stourbridge and second-placed Kettering Town,
the teams swapped places as the Poppies did the `double` over the Glassboys by winning 2-1 on Saturday.

In front of a crowd of 1,734 Stourbridge broke the deadlock with 15 minutes remaining when Leon Broadhurst poked home from close range after visiting `keeper Paul White had dropped a cross.

But the Poppies came back to equalise 5 minutes from time when Brett Solkhon finished off a Marcus Kelly cross.

And then 3 minutes into stoppage time, the visitors were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out and Cambridge United loanee Tom Knowles fired the ball home.

The top two are still ten points clear of the chasing pack, which is led by Stratford Town, led by former Kettering boss Thomas Baillie.

He saw his side win 1-0 at Redditch United, courtesy of a goal 19 minutes from time from another former Poppies player, Wilson Carvalho.

King`s Lynn Town and Alvechurch now occupy the remaining play-off places after Biggleswade Town`s run of six league games without defeat was ended at Coalville Town.

Lynn were held to a 1-1 draw at mid-table St Ives Town, whose Ollie Snaith gave them a 19th minute lead.

Adam Marriott restored parity just past the hour-mark, but a much-improved Saints side held firm.

Alvechurch took advantage of the Waders` defeat by winning 1-0 at Lye Meadow against Rushall Olympic, thanks to a goal 4 minutes into time added on at the end of the game from Aaron Lloyd.

Kairo Mitchell broke the deadlock after 58 minutes at Owen Street to give Coalville the lead against Biggleswade.

Ten minutes later, Tom McGlinchey made sure the points stayed in Leicestershire with the Ravens` second.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds could have moved to within a point of the top five had they beaten Banbury United at Hayden Road.

But the Puritans earned a point from a 1-1 draw.

Diamonds opened the scoring 12 minutes into the second half when, after Alex Collard`s effort had been blocked, Ben Diamond made no mistake with the rebound.

But Banbury grabbed the equaliser in the 78th minute when Ricky Johnson set up sub-Steve Diggin to score from close range.

Needham Market`s top five claims took a blow as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at Bloomfields against fourth-bottom St Neots Town.

Russell Short scored the all-important goal for the Saints after 54 minutes.

That win was crucial as all the others below them picked up a point each.

Bottom-markers Bedworth United earned a point from a 2-2 draw at another struggler, Tamworth, whose Kyle Hayden put them in front after 11 minutes.

Luke Rowe equalised 9 minutes later, and the Greenbacks took the lead immediately after half-time through Levi Rowley.

But the crowd of 640 at The Lamb saw derby honours end even when Jordan Clement equalised 14 minutes from time.

Second-bottom Halesowen Town picked up a point from a 1-1 draw at Barwell, whose Brady Hickey cancelled out Dan Sweeney`s goal on the hour-mark, just 5 minutes later.

Third-bottom Lowestoft Town also drew 1-1 at Garden Walk against mid-table but out of form Royston Town.

The Crows had lost their previous three games 1-0 so when they trailed to Shaun Bamment`s 78th minute effort, home fans feared the worst – until Tom Newman popped up with the equaliser 5 minutes into stoppage time!

Hitchin Town pulled three points clear of the drop zone after winning 2-1 at Leiston.

Scott Belgrave put the Canaries in front after 11 minutes and Isaac Galliford eventually doubled that on the hour-mark.

Will Davies reduced the deficit 7 minutes later, but the Suffolk side wasn`t able to find a leveller.
