2023/24 Fixture Preview

It’s the time supporters, players and officials have been eagerly waiting for – the fixtures for the 2023/24 Pitching In Southern Football League season.

The opening day of the new campaign on August 5th involves just the Premier Division Central and Premier Division South, with Division One Central and Division One South getting underway on August 12th.

The opening games in the Premier Division Central sees AFC Telford United, back in the league for the first time under its current guise after suffering relegation from the Vanarama National League North, having become a founder member of the Alliance Premier League in 1979/80, welcome Royston Town to the New Bucks Head.

Kettering Town, relegated with Telford and returning to the league after four seasons away, have a derby game at newly promoted Stamford AFC at the Zeeco Stadium.

The Daniels won the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands title in 2022/23.

The other side who came down from the National League North, Leamington, are back in the Southern League for the first time since 2016/17 and are at home at Your Co-op Community Stadium to Long Eaton United, who won promotion via the Northern Premier League Division One East play-offs last season to make their debut at Step 3 level.

AFC Sudbury, who were members of the league back in 2009/10, set off on their Step 3 adventure after winning promotion via the Isthmian League North play-offs with a home game against Barwell.

Halesowen Town, promoted via the NPL Division One Midlands play-offs, are back in the league following a two-season gap and the well-supported Yeltz have a home game against Leiston, who impressed everyone last season after finishing third.

Berkhamsted, who swept all before them in winning Division One Central last season, also have a home game on the opening day, with Nuneaton Borough visiting Broadwater.

Another big crowd is expected at the Victoria Ground as Bromsgrove Sporting welcome neighbours Redditch United.

The opening fixtures in the Premier Division South sees Hungerford Town, back in the league for the first time since 2015/16 after suffering relegation from the National League South, welcome Plymouth Parkway to Bulpit Lane.

AFC Totton and Sholing, champions and play-off winners of Division One South respectively in 2022/23, are both away on the opening day of the new campaign.

The Stags, who last played at Step 3 level in 2013/14, travel to north London to play Harrow Borough, while the Boatmen, debuting at this level, could even share a bus with their south coast neighbours as they travel to Silver Jubilee Stadium to play Hendon!

Didcot Town, who came up via the Division One Central play-offs, begin their first Premier Division game since 2010/11 at the Loop Meadow Stadium against Hayes & Yeading United.

Basingstoke Town, promoted as champions of the Isthmian League South Central, make their return to the league for the first time since 2017/18 with the long journey to Devon to play Tiverton Town.

The team who came up with Basingstoke via the play-offs, Walton & Hersham, make their debut as a Southern League club with a game at Winchester City.

Looking much further ahead to the Boxing Day games, in the Premier Division Central, Halesowen versus AFC Telford United stands out as a game which could attract a massive crowd to The Grove.

While in the Premier Division South, Gosport Borough against Sholing at Privett Park and Dorchester Town versus Poole Town are two games that should also pull in the punters.

In Division One Central on Boxing Day, Biggleswade FC take on landlords Bedford Town at The Eyrie, so that should attract a healthy attendance, as should the derby at Creasey Park between AFC Dunstable and Leighton Town.

Division One South’s outstanding game is the New Forest derby between Bashley and Bemerton Heath Harlequins.
