REVIEW | TUESDAY ACTION

A round-up of all the Pitching In Southern League midweek action

The Pitching In Southern League Premier South and Central took centre stage on Tuesday evening.

In the Premier South, leaders, Gosport Borough, scored two late goals to take maximum points from a 2-1 win at Beaconsfield Town who went ahead through Asher Yearwood with ten minutes on the clock. Rory Williams levelled right at the death before Dan Wooden popped up with the winner just moments later.

Two more high-flying sides left it late to overturn a deficit as Chesham United fell behind to an early strike from Olatunbosun Adenola at home to Hendon. Zak Joseph notched an equaliser before the winner arrived from leading scorer, Ricardo German with just seven minutes remaining.

Meanwhile Walton & Hersham conceded on the stroke of half-time at Hanwell Town as Matt Mackenzie found the net before Ed Simon responded early in the second half to level the scores. Stefan Ilic then won it on 77 minutes.

There was also a late winner for Salisbury after Daniel Fitchett’s opener in first half stoppage time was cancelled out by Callum Hall for visitors, Plymouth Parkway. Josh Hedges the stepped up to secure the three points for the home team in the 85th minute.

Merthyr Town lost at home to Winchester City despite taking a fourth minute lead through Tom Handley. Goals from Josh McCormick on the half-hour mark and Jamie Barron on 88 minutes saw the points return home with the visitors.

There was a convincing away win for Hayes & Yeading United as they chalked up a 3-0 triumph at Basingstoke Town as a brace from Michael Fernandes was followed by a goal from Steve Ngunga. Also doing well on their travels were Bracknell Town who prospered 4-1 at Harrow Borough. Nana Owusu scored twice as Joseph Grant and Jordan Espirit also got their names on the scoresheet. Nagheeb Ibrahim hit a consolation for the home side.

The new Paul Doswell era started with a win for Sholing as they beat Dorchester Town 2-1 thanks to a double from Dan Mason early in the second half. The home side hit back with a late goal from William Spetch but it proved to too little, too late.

The remaining game saw Conor McDonagh’s two goals win the day for Hungerford Town as they beat Poole Town 2-0.

Over in the Premier Central, not content with scoring nine at the weekend, Coalville Town went to Long Eaton United and added another six to their tally as they ran out 6-0 winners. Terrell Pennant opened the scoring as Luke Shaw and Tom McGlinchey added to the lead before the break. There were second goals for Pennant and McGlinchey in the second half with a strike from Jake Hutchings in between.

Leaders, Mickleover, had to settle for a point at home to Redditch United, who actually took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Alex Cameron. Goals from Ethan Mann and Ben Sault turned the scoreline on its head before Ryan Wollacott popped up with a stoppage time equaliser to make it 2-2 (pictured).

Needham Market sit in second place after they came away from Stamford with a solid 3-0 success thanks to three second half goals from Tevan Allen, Jamie McGrath and Oliver Fraser. Also securing a good away win were Kettering Town who had goals from Sam Bennett and Tyrone Lewthwaite within the final 20 minutes to thank for their 2-0 triumph at Leiston.

Having been beaten heavily at the weekend, Berkhamsted showed great character to respond with a 2-2 draw against Stratford Town, who raced into an early two-goal advantage thanks to Lewis Ludford-Ison and Saturday’s winning goalscorer, Callum Ebanks. However, the home side hit back with goals either side of the interval from Eduard Toiny-Pendred and Sami Bessadi.

The remaining games saw home wins for AFC Telford United, who edged past Alvechurch thanks to Jordan Piggott’s early strike, Leamington, who beat Stourbridge 2-1 with Henry Landers and the experienced Tyrone Barnett on the mark for the hosts whilst there was a first-ever senior goal for rising star, Alfie Steward, in response for the Glassboys, and Nuneaton Borough, who were forced to play their home game at Hinckley LR, and beat Bromsgrove Sporting 2-0 with Leroy Lita setting them on their way and a penalty from Owen Oseni sealing the win late on.

Meanwhile on Monday evening, St. Ives Town picked up a much-needed 3-2 victory over Royston Town with Brandon Njoku hitting a brace, his second proving to be the dramatic stoppage time winner with virtually the last kick of the game.

There was one game in Division One Central and it proved to be packed with action as Biggleswade Town beat Welwyn Garden City 4-3 thanks to two late goals from Jon Clements and Damani Hunter. A brace from the visitors’ Bradley Wadkins was not enough to get anything out of the game for his side.
