PITCHING IN SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER SOUTH | WEEKEND REVIEW

Leaders made to work hard

At the top of the Pitching In Southern League Premier South, Salisbury were made to work hard for their 3-2 home victory over Dorchester Town.

It was the visitors who had the lead at half-time thanks to Will Fletcher’s goal, but that was cancelled out early in the second period when Sido Jombati found the net. Charlie Gunson then turned the scoreline on its head before Joshua Hedges added a third in stoppage time. There was still time for Shaquille Gwengwe to pull a goal back but it proved to be too little, too late.

Four points behind in second place are Chesham United who had second half strikes from Zak Joseph and leading scorer, Ricardo German to thank for a 2-0 victory over Basingstoke Town.

Gosport Borough, who sit third, were held to a goalless home draw by Didcot Town, whilst Merthyr Town grabbed a good 3-2 away triumph at fellow high-flyers, Walton & Hersham.

Lewis Powell set the Welsh outfit on their way with an early goal before Ricardo Rees doubled their advantage in first half stoppage time. Edward Simon pulled a goal back with the last kick of the opening period before Rees restored the two-goal advantage. Mitchal Gough pulled another goal back to set up a grandstand finish as the visitors held on with ten men.

It was a good day for the bottom two as after Didcot’s battling away point, Swindon Supermarine secured their second success of the season as they beat Hayes & Yeading 3-2. Levi Irving set them on their way only for Michael Fernandes to level matters on the stroke of half-time. A brace from the on-loan David Sims-Burgess after the break put them firmly in the driving seat as Omar Rowe’s late strike proved to be a mere consolation.

Moving into the top five are AFC Totton, who won 2-1 at Beaconsfield Town with Joseph Turner and Luke Hallett getting the goals. Also climbing up the table are Hendon who had a good 2-0 away success at Winchester City where a goal in each half from Billy Leonard and Olatunbosun Adenola won the day.

It was a triumphant away day for Tiverton Town who came home from Hanwell Town with a 2-1 victory. Jerry Lawrence and Jack Rice-Lethaby put the Devon club in the driving seat before Elliot Benyon pulled a goal back at the start of the second period.

Hungerford Town beat Harrow Borough 2-1 with all three goals coming in the final quarter-of-an-hour. Jack Wright opened the scoring and then Sam De St. Criox made it two before Pap Jawara pulled one back deep into stoppage time at the end.

There were also home wins for Plymouth Parkway, who beat Bracknell Town 1-0, and Sholing, who had a good 2-0 triumph over Poole Town to move them level on points with their opponents.
