PITCHING IN SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER SOUTH | WEEKEND REVIEW

Leaders held at bottom club

In the Pitching In Southern League Premier South, leaders, Chesham United, were held to a 1-1 draw at bottom of the table, Didcot Town.

The home side took the lead through Robbie Gallagher but Ogochukwu Obi soon restored parity from the penalty spot and that’s how it stayed.

Salisbury hit the 50-point mark in second place thanks to a 4-2 triumph over Tiverton Town. Daniel Fitchett opened the scoring towards the end of the first half before a quick fire double from Noah Coppin put them in the driving seat just past the hour-mark.

The visitors pulled a goal back through Jack Rice-Lethaby only for Coppin to complete his hat-trick from the spot in stoppage time at the end. There was still time River Allen to pull another back right at the death.

There was a good 4-1 victory for Merthyr Town against Basingstoke Town. Two goals from Ricardo Rees and a further strike from Lewys Twamley put them three goals to the good before Brad Wilson reduced the arrears right on half-time.

The second half started with Twamley notching his second goal of the game to secure the points.

It was a good day for Sholing as they secured a 3-1 away win at AFC Totton. It was also significant as Daniel Mason’s brace made him the club’s all-time leading scorer with 284 goals (pictured). Also on the scoresheet was Byron Mason, whilst Scott Rendell hit the home side’s consolation early in the second period.

Also enjoying good away wins were Hanwell Town and Swindon Supermarine. A double from Jenson Wright helped Hanwell secure a 3-0 success at Harrow Borough as Daniel Carr notched the other, whilst Supermarine edged a seven-goal thriller at Beaconsfield Town.

It was Tom McElroy who set the home side on their way only for it to be cancelled out within four minutes by David Sims-Burgess. McElroy put the hosts back in front on 33 minutes and then completed his hat-trick just past the hour to give his side a 3-1 lead.

However, Supermarine are made of stern stuff these days and Zac Kotwica began the fightback with quarter-of-an-hour to go. Sims-Burgess then levelled matters before Jake Andrews hit the winner on 86 minutes.

A goal with just over ten minutes to go from Joseph Grant gave Bracknell Town a single-goal victory over Hendon to keep them in touch with the leading pack, whilst the day’s other two games ended goalless between Dorchester Town and Hungerford Town and Hayes & Yeading United and Walton & Hersham.

There were two games that fell victim of the wet weather, at Gosport Borough and Plymouth Parkway.
