It was a good day for Chesham United in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South as not only did they end Hungerford Town’s long unbeaten League run with an excellent 1-0 away win, but they also saw second-place Salisbury slip at home to see them go five points clear at the top.
A 20th minute goal from Birthday boy, Ricardo German, proved to be the difference for Chesham, whilst over at Salisbury, the evergreen Scott Rendell netted from the penalty spot with quarter-of-an-hour to go to give AFC Totton a 1-0 victory that keeps them just outside the top five.
There was also a surprise home reverse for Merthyr Town as they lost 3-2 at the hands of Beaconsfield Town. Alex John put the home side ahead but it was cancelled out less than ten minutes later by Asher Yearwood before Tom McElroy turned the scoreline on its head in first half stoppage time.
An own goal from Callum Ryan-Phillips put the visitors two goals ahead early in the second period and although Lewys Twamley pulled a goal back late on, it proved to be too little, too late.
Also amongst the top five, Gosport Borough were held at home by Plymouth Parkway. Dan Wooden opened the scoring for the hosts as half-time approached but it was cancelled on the stroke of the interval by Jack Crago and that’s how it remained.
At the bottom Didcot Town secured only their third win in 24 League games as they beat Bracknell Town 1-0 with Patrick Osborne on the mark with the all-important goal with nine minutes left on the clock.
The day’s biggest winners were Sholing who recorded a 5-1 triumph over Winchester City. First half goals from Daniel Mason, Luke Chalwell and Brad Targett put them firmly in command before Alex MacAllister added a fourth just past the hour-mark. Pat Nolan weighed in with a consolation for the visitors but the last word went to Mason who completed the scoring with his second goal of the afternoon.
Swindon Supermarine won again as goals from David Sims-Burgess and Joe Tumelty three minutes from time gave them a 2-1 victory over Walton & Hersham, for whom Stan Flaherty found the net on the hour-mark.
Second half strikes from Will Fletcher and Marcus Daws saw Dorchester Town pick up a key three points from their trip to fellow strugglers, Harrow Borough.
It ended level betweem Tiverton Town and Hayes & Yeading United as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in Devon. Recent arrival Lewis Kinsella put the visitors ahead only for Jerry Lawrence to restore parity midway through the second period.
Meanwhile, Basingstoke Town came from behind to get back into winning ways courtesy of a 2-1 win at Hanwell Town. Billy Upton and Brad Wilson scored early in the second period after Jacob Bancroft had given the home side the lead within the opening minute.
