There’s going to be plenty of drama across all four of our divisions on Saturday as the regular season comes to a close.
In the Pitching In Southern League Division One South, the title is still up for grabs with second-place Frome Town just two points off leaders, Wimborne Town, who missed their chance to become Champions during the week.
They go into Saturday’s home game against play-off-chasing Bristol Manor Farm on the back of a 13-game unbeaten run, which stretches back to the beginning of February.
“It’s exciting and unexpected to still have a chance of winning the League on the final day,” defender, Sam Teale, admitted to us. “After we drew with Wimborne last weekend, I thought our chance had gone.
“It’s a free hit for us as all the pressure is on them. We’re guaranteed second place win, lose or draw so there is no pressure on us.
“We will go out to win the game and hope our neighbours at Melksham Town can do us a favour in their home game against Wimborne. If it’s not meant to be, then we are ready and focused for the play-offs.
“I’ll approach Saturday’s game with the same attitude as any other game. I always want to win, whether it’s the first game or the last game of the season.
“Our goal at the start of the season was to get promoted, whether that’s winning the League or winning the play-offs, that has always been the aim for the last six years.
“We’ve come close a few times so hopefully we can get over the line this year. If we get promoted, I’ll be happy with my personal performance, but if we don’t, I’ll feel like I’ve underachieved as captain.”
At the other end of the field, front-man, James Ollis, is chomping at the bit for the action to get underway.
“It’s all to play for and Saturday is going to be exciting for everyone,” he told us. “First and foremost, we have to concentrate on getting our business done. If we can do that then we have every chance; yes, we know that Wimborne are a good side who you would expect to get the result they need, but we want to ensure that we get the win and extend our unbeaten run.
“As Sam says, we’ll approach Saturday’s game in exactly the same way as we always do and prepare as normal. If all the stars align then it will be happy days!
“I’ve personally had a really good season. I’ve finally hit the 20-goal mark, which is always nice as a forward. As a team we’ve had a couple of Cup runs to go alongside what we’ve done in the League. At the start of the season our aim was to be fighting for promotion, so all in all we’re in a good place and on track with our targets.
“This is always a tough League; there are always four or five teams battling it out at the end for the remaining play-off spots, so it makes every game difficult. It also seems like attendances have increased over the past couple of seasons, so that always makes playing away even tougher.”
Frome Town welcome an in-form Bristol Manor Farm team on Saturday who moved into fourth-place following a 2-0 victory at Tavistock on Thursday evening, whilst title rivals, Wimborne Town, are on their travels as they head to Melksham Town.
