HADLEY | EUROPEAN ACTION

Memorable weekend in San Marino

Pitching In Southern League Division One Central outfit, Hadley, were in European action at the weekend.

They headed to San Marino where they took on local outfit, AC Juvenes Dogana.

The trip was organised by committee member, Chris Nash, who almost 20 years ago set out on a challenge to watch a match in each of UEFA’s member nations.

After clocking up many miles and enjoying plenty of adventures, Chris was left with just one of the 55 member nations to visit – San Marino.

“I wanted to make the last one extra special,” he told us. “So, I hit upon the idea of taking the Hadley team out there with me and for the final game to involve them!

“I contacted the National Tourist Board and was put in contact with Adrian Eacock, an Englishman plying his trade in San Marino. Much research and many Zoom calls later and we were all sorted!”

The trip proved beyond Chris’ wildest dreams as not only did he conduct the ceremonial kick-off, but also came on as a 55th minute substitute and provided the assist for Hadley’s seventh goal in a 9-1 victory.

Around 30 Hadley supporters also made the trip for what will be a never-to-be-forgotten experience for all involved.

"This was a truly memorable way to complete the 55,” Nash continued. “I never thought I'd get the chance to see Hadley play in Europe, let alone play a game for the club, or even make an assist!

“The whole trip was extremely special, and I am really thankful to Juvenes Dogana President, Massimo Zavatta, and Adrian Eacock for facilitating our visit, and making us feel truly welcome throughout.

“I don't know how we are going to top this one, but I've got my thinking cap on!”

Hadley Chairman, Steve Gray, added: "We would like to thank everyone at Juvenes Dogana for making us welcome in San Marino, as well as Chris Nash who made it all happen.

“Our players, management and supporters had a fantastic time, and everyone associated with the club is proud to have played our first-ever game in Europe. It will not be our last, that is for sure.

“We are looking forward to reciprocating the visit and welcoming Juvenes Dogana to Hadley in the near future."
