Wet weather plays its part as October gets underway

The wet weather played its part on Tuesday evening as a number of scheduled games were postponed.

In the Pitching In Southern League Premier South, the night’s only game was a victim of the weather as Chertsey Town’s home encounter against Basingstoke Town was called off for a waterlogged pitch.

Over in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South, leaders, Yate Town, came home from Cinderford Town with a 2-0 win thanks to second half strikes from Joe Guest and Ollie Dewsbury at the death.

Just behind them sit Mousehole who had a convincing 4-1 victory over Bideford AFC. Two first half strikes from Mark Goldsworthy put them in command as Jack Calver and Torin Ntege added two more goals after Josh Webber had reduced the arrears for the visitors just past the hour-mark.

There was a first-ever taste of victory for Shaftesbury at Step 4 as they beat Bemerton Heath Harlequins, who now have their former co-manager, James Milligan, at the helm, by four goals to one. Harry McGrath set them on their way with an early goal. Leighton Thomas got the visitors back in it, but a goal from Greg Peel, another for McGrath and a late Jack Hoey effort won it.

Westbury United got back into winning ways with a hard-earned 1-0 success against Malvern Town as Ashton Shanley got the all-important goal just past the half-hour mark.

The other two games ended up level as Bashley and Melksham Town shared four goals. Lewis Waterfield put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time, but within the opening ten minutes of the second period, goals from Kyle Witt and Mark Cooper had turned the scoreline on its head. Conor Whitely levelled matters on the hour and that is how it remained.

Meanwhile it finished 1-1 at Didcot Town against Evesham United, who edged in front through Amer Awadh in the first half. Taylor-Jay Bedwell equalised with 15 minutes left on the clock.

The weather had a much bigger impact in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central where five games were off and only two survived.

Enfield recovered from going a goal down at home to Barton Rovers halfway through the first half following a John Shamalo strike. Three second half goals from Joni Vukaj, Robert Clark and Luke Clark won the day.

The other game saw Hadley march on thanks to Hermes Gbio who delivered the winner just past hour against Aylesbury United.

In the Emirates FA Cup third round qualifying replays, Bishops Cleeve’s game at Chesham United was postponed, as was Lowestoft Town's clash with Haringey Borough. It was a good night for Leiston who won 3-1 at higher-level Hornchurch after extra-time, but Winchester City succumbed to a 3-0 set-back at Weymouth. Royston Town were edged out 1-0 at the hands of Peterborough Sports.
