Moving up into third place in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South table at the weekend were Evesham United.
Their 3-2 away win at Bashley means that they have lost just two of their opening nine League games, a far cry from this time last year when they were struggling to get into their stride having suffered play-off defeat at the end of the previous campaign.
“This time last year we were sat at the bottom of the table and struggling to find our form,” recalled defender, Michael O'Regan. “So it’s nice to be up there at the right end of the table with some points on the board this time around.
“Our best performances are still to come, though. Defensively we’ve not been good enough, but we have been able to out-score teams.
“On Saturday the first half just turned into a basketball match. Five goals tells its own story as we went in at the break 3-2 up.
“The second half was always going to be different; we didn’t have as much of the ball, but the important thing was that we had a lead to protect and we did just that. It was one of those games where we weren’t at our best, but we got the job done.
“This is an open division, in the time that I have been at Evesham, if you can put a few results together, you soon fly up the table. There are going to be a few teams challenging for the play-off places this season and we’re certainly in that category.
“We’ve put ourselves into a decent early position, but it’s only a start and we need to keep improving week by week. We all have our specific roles to play and my aim is to keep doing mine to the best of my ability.
“We’ve always had one of the best defensive records, so we need to get back to basics in that respect. If we can do that, then it will give us a great platform to build from as we look to maintain our challenge.”
A home game against a Mousehole outfit who are just a couple of points behind them awaits at the weekend.
