There was a big result for Cribbs on Tuesday evening as they recovered from a heavy defeat at the weekend to win at leaders, Yate Town.
It was a night of firsts as recently-installed manager, Ryan Crouch, secured his first victory in the hot-seat and in doing so inflicted Yate’s first home loss of the campaign in the Pitching In Southern League Division One South.
“It was an unbelievable performance,” said teenager, Spike Weaver, who opened the scoring during the opening period with a well-taken individual effort. “From the moment we arrived, we just felt as though we were going to get something from this game.
“There was real belief even though we were going to a side that are many people’s tip for the title and who had lost only once all season.
“I just tried to follow the Gaffer’s message of staying disciplined defensively and be aware of the numerous threats from our hosts.
“We looked to cause them problems on the counter-attack, which we did at times, and I was buzzing to put us in front during the first half.
“It was a massive win in the end and it gives us something really positive to build on now. Yes, we’ve beaten top of the League but we can’t sit back and take anything for granted because we know that we have another tough game coming up on Saturday and if you take your eye off the ball in this League, you get punished.”
Weaver was one of a number of new faces to arrive at the club during the summer as the squad that reached the play-offs last term broke up.
It’s been a tough start on the pitch, but Weaver has settled in well to life at the Bristol-based club.
“I am loving life here,” he continued. “There’s a great group of lads and it’s just an amazing club to be part of.
“Everyone involved works so hard to keep pushing the club on. It’s already become a real home for me, I think it was because there was a lot of us all arriving at the same time and we were able to help each other settle in.
“Obviously we want to be higher up the table than we currently are, so we need to keep adding points to our tally now. There will certainly be plenty of opportunity during the weeks ahead.
“I can’t wait to get stuck into it. Nothing beats being out there playing at this level and scoring goals. I’ve got a couple to my name now and Tuesday night has just whetted my appetite for more!
“This level is a lot different to what I have played at before. There are a few lads in the same boat, but we are adapting to the demands with every game we’re involved in. There are a lot of experienced players involved who have played at higher levels, but I am enjoying the challenge.
“My aims are to score a few more goals but, more importantly, help us continue climbing the table.”
The next challenge comes in the shape of a home game on Saturday against an Evesham United outfit who won the PST Sport Club of the Month award for November 2024.
