THAME UNITED | THE LATE SHOW

Curtis Brown on a dramatic comeback under the lights

There was plenty of drama at Thame United on Tuesday evening as the home side came back from four goals down to draw 4-4 with Stotfold in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central.

The visitors raced into a two-goal lead within the opening ten minutes and when they bagged a fourth goal on the hour-mark, it looked like game over.

But within two minutes of the fourth goal going in, the evergreen Jefferson Louis had reduced the arrears before a frantic final eight minutes saw the hosts score three times, with the equaliser coming deep into stoppage time courtesy of substitute, Curtis Brown.

The late drama followed on from Saturday’s game where an 89th minute goal from Finlay Murray gave them a 2-1 triumph at Hertford Town.

It’s not the first time this season that Brown has grabbed a vital late goal; he got the winner in the final minutes at Beaconsfield Town at the end of November.

“Tuesday’s game was frustrating to watch from the sidelines,” admitted Brown. “Having got such a good away win in the previous game, we expected to take it into this one, but it just wasn’t happening for us.

“The opening ten minutes set the tone and when I came on, we were 4-1 down and starring defeat in the face.

“But we got a second goal with around eight minutes to go and it just galvanised us. Everyone dug in and played their part, it was as if a wave of belief just came over us and carried us through.

“Coming off the bench, you always hope to make an impact, so to play my part in the comeback and get the equaliser right at the death was a great feeling.

“As a group I feel that we’ve exceeded expectations this season. We’ve reached the 50-point mark and sit just inside the play-off places. There’s a lot of work still to be done to be able to secure our place in the top five, we know that.

“It’s been a steady season for myself; Tuesday’s goal was my tenth of the season and I’ve also weighed in with a few assists as well. I’ve got areas of my game which need improvement, of course, but the coaching staff here are excellent in aiding that.

“The League is just as competitive as I expected it to be. There are a lot of tough games and teams pushing each other, so it’s great to be part of that.

“As we look ahead to the rest of the season, our aim is simple; to make the play-offs. We’ll be pushing as hard as we can for promotion and if I can play my part in that, then I will be very happy indeed.

“On Saturday we play host to Biggleswade FC. They are one of the teams just outside the leading pack, so we don’t want to let them gain any ground on us.

“Hopefully we can pick up where we left off in the final ten minutes or so of the last game.”
