There are plenty of exciting sub-plots developing across all four of our divisions. One such is in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South where the top two, Merthyr Town and AFC Totton, look full of goals.
One of the players responsible for shooting AFC Totton to promotion, having come so close last season, is Tony Lee.
His goal in last weekend’s 6-1 victory over Marlow was his 16th in the League so far this term.
“Saturday’s game was always going to be tough and so it proved despite the final scoreline,” he admitted to us. “Marlow are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and threw everything at us.
“It was 1-1 as half-time approached, but we managed to get two goals in quick succession late in the first half and we were able to build on it after the break to what ended up being a commanding victory in the end.
“Fighting it out at the top of the table, we have to make sure that we do everything right all of the time because we’re there to be shot at.
“We’ve drawn a few more games than we would have wanted to at this stage, but you have to look at the fact that we’ve only lost two of our 28 League games this season and sit six points off the leaders with two games in hand on them.
“We’ve also conceded the fewest goals, so with this in mind it’s up to the attacking players like myself to get the goals so we can take advantage of this.
“This time last year we went on a run where we got stronger and stronger with every game, so hopefully it can be the same this time around, but with a happier ending, of course!
“The promotion race is an exciting one with two very good teams going toe-to-toe for the title. Both teams play attractive football and there is so much talent in each team. It’s shaping up to quite an encounter when we meet on March 1st.
“Once again the Premier South has proved this year that anyone can pick up results against anyone. If you let your standards drop, you soon get found out, there’s no hiding place in this League.
“There’s no denying the fact that promotion is our aim, everyone knows that and we’ve got a great group of players here that is more than capable of delivering it. On and off the pitch we continue to work hard and hopefully this season will be the one where we can finally get it over the line, one way or another!”
A trip to Taunton Town is on the agenda for Saturday.
