As we enter the month of April, the whole of the top half of the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central table are still in contention for a top five finish, which certainly makes for an exciting run-in to the end of the season.
Amongst the cluster of clubs currently sat just outside the play-off zone is Spalding United who made it five wins from their last six outings with a resounding 5-0 triumph at Lowestoft Town at the weekend.
It’s a venue where manager, Jimmy Dean, has not had much joy over the years, but on this occasion he found it difficult to pick fault in his team’s performance.
“I don’t have the best of records there personally, but there were no negatives at all from Saturday’s display,” he said. “We went into the game looking for a performance as well as a result and we managed to get both.
“It’s always a difficult place to come to but we started well and were able to maintain the high standards throughout the game.
“To score five away from home is always a great achievement and there were a couple of crackers amongst them as well which made it even more special.
“I felt that the structure of the team was really good and everyone contributed and played their part in the victory. It’s given us added confidence to take into the run-in and that is the level we need to be at for our remaining games now.
“There are a number of teams still in the running for those play-off places but we have to back ourselves. That’s three away wins in a row now, which represents a big turnaround in our form on the road, whilst at home, we fancy our chances against anyone.”
The Tulips currently sit in eighth place, just two points shy of the top five. Their away run will be tested on Saturday with a mouth-watering encounter with AFC Telford United.
The remainder of April sees them play host to Alvechurch before a trip to AFC Sudbury. It’s then a return to home action against fellow play-off hopefuls, Stamford AFC before closing the regular season away at Barwell.
