KETTERING TOWN | DRAMA AWAITS

The battle for the Premier Central title goes down to the wire

There’s going to be drama on Saturday, of that there is no doubt.

In the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central, the title race goes down to the wire with current leaders, Bedford Town, facing the challenge of a Kettering Town outfit who sit three points behind but with a better goal difference.

Both sides will be given stern tests at the weekend; Bedford host an in-form Stourbridge, whilst Kettering take on a Banbury United outfit who have been notoriously difficult to break down this season and arrive with the best defensive record in the League.

One of the players responsible for breaching that well-drilled back-line is Jonny Edwards. He grabbed a vital late winner for the Poppies at Biggleswade Town on Monday for his 18th goal in all competitions this term and is looking forward to Saturday’s action.

“We’d all be silly not to be relishing it,” he told us. “To be in contention for winning the League on the final day of the season is a big factor in why we play football.

“If we don’t get automatic promotion on Saturday, then we’ll be doing everything we can to do it through the play-offs.

“We won’t be approaching the game any differently to usual; why should we? We’ve got this far by doing things a certain way so we’ll keep doing that and hopefully we can achieve something special.

“From my point of view, it’s been a season of ups and downs, as all seasons are. I’ve not started as many games as I would have liked but I can’t complain about a return of 18 goals in all competitions. Of course, like all strikers, I would have liked more!

“From where this club has been over the past couple of seasons, whatever happens, we’ve put ourselves into a great position to build from. There have been some really positive moments; the club has big ambitions and we’ve made great strides towards that.

“This level is stronger than it has ever been. Usually there are two or three stand-out teams, but this time around there have been more stronger teams overall. It just shows the quality of players at Step 3 these days and it’s made for a competitive division.”
