Continuity will be the key at Stourbridge after Darryl Knights was appointed as manager, a position that he will combine with his existing role of Academy Manager.
The 37 year-old takes over at the helm at the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central club following the departure of Liam McDonald as the club grapples with off-the-field issues surrounding their ground, which requires extensive safety works that will limit capacity going into the new season.
“All of the things off-the-pitch are in the hands of good people who are working tirelessly to get them resolved and find solutions,” Knights told us. “I’m not letting it affect me; my focus is firmly fixed on building a strong group of players that can compete at this level.
“Taking on this role wasn’t a hard decision at all. I live in Stourbridge, it’s my team, so the opportunity to manage the club alongside my Academy Manager position fills me with immense pride.
“It’s exciting and a chance to make a real difference as well as further strengthening the pathway here, which has already proved fruitful. I know the club inside out, so that will help in being able to hit the ground running.
“We’ve been able to get a good core of players to commit from last season as well as bringing in a number of new faces so far, with more announcements to come.
“Things are coming together nicely. Yes, things are maybe a bit tougher than in previous years given the situation the club now finds itself in, but I would not have taken this job if I genuinely didn’t believe that we could put a squad together that can be successful during the season ahead.
“It’s a strong League with some really good teams and talented players, but my coaching team and I believe in the project here and we’re confident that we can take the team forward.
“I’m a front-foot style of manager that wants to excite fans by playing fast, attacking football. I want to bring the good times back and put smiles on faces.”
Knights had a spell as interim manager of the Glassboys during the 2023/24 campaign before having a spell on the coaching staff at nearby Bromsgrove Sporting last term.
He will be joined by experienced front-man, Tyrone Barnett, who will become player-assistant manager having enjoyed a productive spell in front of goal for the Black Country outfit last season, whilst former player, Drew Canavan, becomes first-team coach.
The club has come to an agreement with Stourbridge Rugby Club to play their home pre-season friendlies at their Stourton Park ground.
