Premier Central new-boys bring in experienced head

Pitching In Southern League Premier Central new-boys, Worcester City, have added the experience of over 300 Football League games to their ranks following the recent signing of Paul Downing.

The 33 year-old defender, who has turned out for the likes of Walsall, MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth during a long and successful career in the game, is excited by the challenge ahead of him at a club that is moving back up the football pyramid.

“Living locally and with a young family, location was a big factor,” he told us. “But when you also add in how big this club can be, the journey it’s on and, of course, the fact that home games will be played at Sixways Stadium, and you can see what an exciting project this is to be part of.

“I had some really good conversations with the manager earlier in the close season and I liked what he said and his vision for the club.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and being part of things here. It’s an extremely competitive League that we’re going into, but I am joining a club that is on the up and has huge momentum following successive promotions.

“The club is ambitious and wants to keep improving and growing; if I can play my part in that by drawing upon the higher level experience that I have, then I will be happy.

“I know that there is some real quality in the Premier Central. There are a number of clubs with big budgets for this level and we’ve also got plenty of local games to look forward to, so there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s going to be an exciting season ahead.

“I’ll be looking to enjoy my football and help those around me as much as I can. Hopefully we’ll be able to give a good account of ourselves, show people what we are capable of at this level and then see where it takes us.”
