Having been handed a reprieve from relegation during the summer, Barwell manager, Jimmy Ginnelly, has been busy rebuilding his squad in readiness for the challenge that lies ahead in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central.
The experienced Ginnelly knows that he has to cast his net far and wide, with a key ingredient being able to identify and nurture emerging talent from lower levels.
A number of the new arrivals this summer have come from this route, each with a point to prove as they look to make their mark at Step 3.
One such is 19 year-old goalkeeper, Finn Osborn. The former West Bromwich Albion Academy player moved into senior men’s football at the age of just 16 with Kenilworth Sporting, where he was able to chalk up over half-a-century of appearances.
More recently he established himself as first-choice between the posts for Atherstone Town at Step 5, helping them reach the Midland Football League Premier Division play-offs amidst over 60 outings and now, already with well over 100 non-League appearances under his belt whilst still a teenager, he has the opportunity to show what he can do in the Premier Central.
“I’m buzzing to have this chance to step up and continue my progression,” Osborn told his club’s media. “Hopefully I can prove myself and have a good season at this level.
“My transition from Academy football to men’s football came early. There’s a big difference, of course, but I feel that I’ve taken it in my stride and now I stand here having played a lot of competitive football for my age.
“It’s been really beneficial for me and I’ve learned a lot in a relatively short space of time. Last season was good as we finished third at Atherstone Town and I was able to play regularly and enjoy my football.
“I feel that I have earned this opportunity and now I am determined to make the most of it and repay the faith that the Gaffer has shown in me.
“The lads are class; we’re a new group but we’re gelling together quickly and we can't wait to get stuck into the season.
“Personally I will be looking to have a solid campaign, get my name out there and show what I can do to help the club give a good account of itself in what is a strong League.”
