A fantastic run of form transformed Leighton Town’s season last term as they went from slogging it out in the lower reaches of the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central table to genuine play-off contenders.
The club has worked hard over the summer to keep together the core group of players who turned their fortunes around, including Tolu Ikuyinminu, who ended the campaign with the Manager’s Player of the Season award.
“What we achieved towards the back-end of last season and what we are building here means that it is very hard to pull me away from this project,” he told us. “There have been approaches from other clubs, but this is the ideal place for me at this stage of my career and I am excited to see what this group can go on to achieve.
“I know the management team here really well having also worked with them at previous clubs and their way of doing things and the high standards they set, be it in training or game situations, matches my own, so there are more than enough reasons to convince me that this is the place to be.
“Our preparations have started well; we’ve been working on getting our fitness levels up in readiness for the start of the friendlies and I just want to get the ball rolling now.
“I’ve taken care of my body during our time away from the club and went back in early to condition myself to be even more prepared because whilst I was happy with how last season went for me, I don’t want to stand still and I’m looking to perform even better.
“Division One Central is going to be another competitive dog fight. We will see some surprises, with some teams performing better than expected, but I am also expecting my team to be strong and be in and around the leading pack.
“We gave ourselves a lot to do last season with our slow start, but ended up only a couple of places away from the play-offs, so a solid start this time around can make all of the difference.
“I’m expecting a lot from myself this season. First and foremost, I want to ensure that I stay injury-free and then help us keep as many clean sheets as possible. I would also like to improve my goals and assists tally at the other end of the pitch and continue to grow as a leader amongst the group.
“As a team we want to be up there challenging at the right end of the table and also in the hunt for trophies by being hard to beat and well-organised as we were during our long unbeaten run last term.”
