The mindless vandalism suffered by Bristol Manor Farm recently has only acted to bring the club even closer together and more determined to succeed.
A vehicle was driven onto the pitch at The NL Services Stadium and set alight in one of the goals, destroying a section of the pitch as well as goalposts and nets.
It meant that a much-anticipated home pre-season friendly had to be switched to another venue and costly repairs and security enhancements have had to be made in order to be ready for the start of the new season.
It has, quite literally, been a baptism of fire for new manager, Will Justin, who has had to build a completely new team at the Pitching In Southern League Division One South outfit.
“This is more than just a football club, it’s a community hub,” he told us. “It’s a place for people of all ages; for families, volunteers and fans, and the damage that was done was devastating for so many people.
“But, taking the positives from what was a very bad situation, it’s only strengthened the resolve and determination of everyone at the club. We’ve had to build a new team with 18/19 players coming in and it’s quickly brought us all closer together.
“The support from the football community has also been superb and we’ve had messages and donations from clubs not just closer to home but all over the UK.
“It shows at first-hand how football comes together at times like this and we thank everyone for their kindness.”
Having previously guided both Welton Rovers and Oldland Abbotonians to promotion in his previous managerial appointments, Justin is relishing the challenge that stands before him at Bristol Manor Farm.
“This has always been a big club locally with fantastic supporters,” he added. “Personally I felt ready to step up to this level but when the vacancy came up, I knew only too well that I would be up against some strong competition for the job.
“But I have every faith in my ability and credentials to make my mark here and it’s an exciting opportunity.
“As I say, a complete rebuild of the team has been required. We’ve tried to keep things under the radar and do our business quietly.
“There are some big clubs that have come down into Division One South this season, whilst the teams that come up all have good momentum, so it’s going to be competitive.
“We’re going to be a team that will get better and better as the season goes on. We’ll be well-prepared and structured because each game will be tough.
“I’m not setting any targets with regards to where we will finish. We’re an unknown quantity, so let’s just take things a step at a time and see where it takes us.”
There’s a mouth-watering Emirates FA Cup tie at Hellenic League Premier Division neighbours, Mangotsfield United, at the weekend.
“The FA Cup is such an exciting competition to be involved in,” added Justin. “I remember watching it as a kid and then when I played my first game in it, against Bridgwater United if I remember correctly, it felt really special that I had participated in a competition that is renowned all over the world.
“As a manager it also gives me a great sense of pride and the fact that Saturday will be our first competitive game too only adds to the anticipation.
“It’s going to be a good gauge as to where we’re at as a group. We’ve worked hard in training but with so many new players we don’t know what to expect and even though we are a level above our hosts, I would put us as the underdogs going into the tie.
“The fact that it’s also a local derby is another exciting factor to add into the mix.”
