Tiverton Town provided the perfect tonic to their opening day home defeat at the hands of Chertsey Town as they went to Dorchester Town on Tuesday evening and came home 3-1 victors for their first win of the season in the Pitching In Southern League Premier South.
It was an impressive performance by the Devon outfit, with summer signing, Corey Koerner, a solid figure amongst the back-line.
“We knew that we had to put our all into this game in order to try and make amends for our previous display,” he told us. “We fell well below where we expect to be on the opening day of the season and it only acted to make us even more determined to go out and put in a solid performance at Dorchester Town.
“Our hosts made the play-offs last season and they are expected to be up there challenging again this time around, but to a man everyone did their jobs and it gave us the basis to go on and get the three points.
“These are the kind of levels that we need to reach week in, week out in this League; we have to be able to take this momentum into Saturday now and add to our points tally.
“It’s definitely a competitive League but from what I have seen so far, we can more than hold our own. We want to be able to kick-on from here and get ourselves onto a positive run of results.
“My personal aims don’t differ too much to that of the team as a whole; I’ll be pushing myself every step of the way and fighting to show what I can do every game that I am picked so that I can keep that starting shirt.”
Koerner’s journey to the club has been a long and winding one.
“It’s been a tough journey being in and out of academy football through my youth years, going through trials and not being successful,” he continued. “But I think it fuelled me even more to be the best player I can be.
“Moving into college football at 15 helped me understand a different playing style and being in and around the Yeovil Town first team the past two years was a really good experience, training full-time and learning from the experienced lads around me.
“I was able to get some much-needed senior men’s experience with a loan spell at Sherborne in the Wessex League and that was a big help. I’ve tried to take on board everything I’ve learned along the way and now I am at the stage in my career where I just need to be playing regular football and hopefully I will get that here at Tiverton Town at what is a good level.”
An away game at Hungerford Town awaits on Saturday.
