GOSPORT BOROUGH | STANDARDS HIGH

We speak to popular defender, Charlie Wassmer

An impressive second half showing saw Gosport Borough overcome a half-time deficit to run out 3-1 winners at Chertsey Town on Saturday.

“It was as if we flicked a switch at half-time,” Charlie Wassmer told us. “We totally dominated the second period and fully deserved the win in the end at what is always a difficult place to go to.

“From a defensive point of view, we knew that we would be coming up against two good strikers, so to be able to restrict them to just one shot on target all game in their own back yard, is testament to how hard we worked as a team.

“It gave us the platform to go on and get what is a great win on the road.”

Whilst he wasn’t able to get his name on the scoresheet on this occasion, the popular defender is proud of his record in front of goal so far this season.

“Scoring three goals in the first four games is not normally something you see from a centre half,” he added. “It’s a record that I am proud of; you have to take the highs with the lows in football, so I’ll take that all day!

“We set high standards here, so we’ve not been happy with the start we’ve made to the current campaign.

“Things are starting to gel now, though, and Saturday’s result made it three League games unbeaten.

“The Pitching In Southern League Premier South is always tough and it’s getting tougher each year; there are a lot of teams now pumping serious money in all trying to achieve promotion.

“I’m experienced enough to know that it’s not always money that buys you success at this level. It certainly helps, but it is not the be all and end all.

“We have our targets as a team; we know what we are capable of and where we want to be come the end of the season.

“It’s a cliché, but we’re taking it a game at a time and not getting too carried away. No-one seems to be running away with it in these early weeks, so it’s a case of concentrating on getting our own house in order and then seeing where it takes us.”

Pictured we see some of the Gosport Borough fans who made the trip to Chertsey Town at the weekend. It’s destination Weymouth for them on Tuesday evening as the battle for points continues.
