Hat-trick for popular goal-getter

Brad Wilson knows a thing or two about scoring goals. After all, he has over 100 of them for Basingstoke Town since joining the club in November 2019.

On Tuesday evening, the popular goal-getter claimed a hat-trick to help his side chalk up three precious Pitching In Southern League Premier South points in a 4-2 victory over Yate Town.

“It’s always nice to score a hat-trick,” he told us. “I think my last one came in our promotion season of 2022/23 against Guernsey, so it was overdue!

“We needed that win; we’ve let ourselves down over the past few games with disappointing mistakes that have ended up costing us and given our opponents the upper hand.

“So, the three points was the main thing here, for me to score three of our four goals was an added bonus!

“It’s been a difficult start to the season for me, to be honest. I picked up an injury towards the end of last season and it caused me to miss most of pre-season, so I am still playing catch-up.

“I’m behind where the boys are in terms of match sharpness, but I’m getting there. We’ve got an incredible team this season and it pushes everyone to get to our best and maintain high standards.

“In terms of results, it’s been a slower start than we would have hoped when we went into the season.

“As I say, we’ve let ourselves down on a few occasions where we’ve not got the results we should have done, but this is a good, honest group and we hold ourselves accountable when needed.

“It’s our first League win since the opening day of the season, so we want to use this as a springboard now and start moving in the right direction.

“The Premier South is the toughest it has been in years, so it won’t be easy. The standard of the teams is incredible this season, but we’re looking up the table and aiming to challenge amongst the leading pack.

“Saturday will be a good gauge for us as we go to Gloucester City, one of the more fancied sides, so we’re looking forward to taking Tuesday’s result and performance into this one.”

We ended by asking Wilson his aims and targets for the season.

“I go into every season aiming for 20 goals and 15 assists,” he said. “Team-wise, we want to be in contention in play-offs; a club as big as ours needs to be up there challenging.”
