It didn’t take Anthony Dwyer long to make an impact at Barwell.
Just hours after joining the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central club from Rushall Olympic, the experienced goal-getter was unleashed off the substitutes’ bench to bag a brace and help his new team overturn a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at Real Bedford.
“It’s always nice to make an early impact when you join a new club,” he told us. “I was happy to come off the bench and get the goals to earn us a good point on the road.
“Two goals down and entering the final 15 minutes, it looked as though it wasn’t going to be our day. It would have been easy to just throw in the towel, but the boys stuck at it and kept believing.
“Credit to them because they showed so much determination and I was able to feed off that when I came on.
“It was nice to chip in with a couple of goals, but this really was a team effort where everyone played their part.”
The point on the road means that Barwell have taken a total of 11 points from their opening ten League games this term having been handed a reprieve from relegation during the summer.
“From what I have seen so far, there is plenty of talent and ability here,” Dwyer added. “It’s a tough League, I know that as I’ve played in it a lot over the years, but there’s no reason why we can’t get into the top half and then start pushing for those play-off places.
“Of course, we don’t want to run before we can walk; we’ll take it a game at a time and see where it takes us.
“Hopefully I can continue chipping in with goals to help us add to our points tally. If I can do that and enjoy my football here, I will be happy.”
The next challenge comes in the shape of a trip to Leiston at the weekend.
