A performance full of character and belief was personified by Tommy Hughes last weekend as Bury Town came from behind to pick up all three points courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Banbury United.
The Pitching In Southern League Premier Central new-boys found themselves behind early on but were able to level matters just before the break as Hughes then went on to grab a winner as the clock ticked down towards the end.
“As a team we started the game slowly,” Hughes admitted to us. “We probably deserved to go behind, to be honest, although there was a hint of offside about their goal.
“We reacted well; we refused to let our heads drop and set about the task of getting back into it straight away.
“Having equalised just before the break, we were confident at half-time that we could come out for the second half and go on to win the game, which we did.
“The dynamic changed when they went down to ten men, but we stuck to our task and thoroughly deserved the win in the end. Personally, it was nice that I was able to get the all-important goal.
“It was a very welcome three points, but I don’t think we have the number of points on the board so far to reflect how well we have played in certain games.
“We’re still getting used to this level, but we have to be able to find the balance of performing well whilst at the same time getting wins and adding to our points’ tally.
“It was a step into the unknown coming into this League. I didn’t know what to expect, but I have been impressed with the strength and quality of the clubs we have faced. It’s a very competitive League, but I think that overall we have competed very well.
“Our aims as a team are to finish as high as possible and see where that takes us. I believe we can turn good performances into more points, so let’s see as the games come thick and fast.
“Personally, I just want to keep playing and enjoying my football. It was nice to get the Man of the Match award at the last game and a few more of those along the way would be good too!”
A home encounter with Halesowen Town awaits at the weekend.
