Josh Steele was the toast of Biggleswade Town at the weekend as his four goals helped The Waders to a 7-0 victory over Rayners Lane in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central.
It’s a feat that is made even more special by the fact that Steele is naturally a defender.
“I’ve been a centre back for most of my career,” Steele told us. “Scoring goals doesn’t come often for me, but since going up front I’ve bagged a couple of braces and now this!
“To get four goals in a 7-0 win, you can’t complain about that, can you? It was a really mature performance from everyone; this is the standard we need to be performing at in every game.
“Winning games in this League is always tough, so to do it by seven goals is a credit to all involved.
“It was also important to keep a clean sheet and now we must take this momentum into our next game against AFC Dunstable on Tuesday.
“In terms of my own performance levels, I feel that I have been improving with every game. I’m on ten goals now and chasing to be top scorer in the League… I never thought I would be saying that!
“As a team, we had a really good start then hit a run of four losses in a row, so it’s been a case of playing catch-up since then and now we sit just outside the top five.
“We’re more than capable of going on a run and getting into the mix. This is a competitive League; it’s exactly how we expected it to be going into the season. There are some good sides involved, so every point is important.
“I want to do all I can to help us climb the table and win football matches. If I can do that and also finish top scorer, then that would be a dream come true.”
