It’s fair to say that Winchester City were made to work hard for their latest three points as they overcame the challenge of Willand Rovers by two goals to one at the weekend.
The victory strengthens their position within the top five and also sends them into two tough pre-Christmas clashes in good heart.
This coming Saturday they head to Hartpury before hosting fellow high-flyers, Shaftesbury, the following weekend.
Slotting well into the team this season has been Brad Waters. He arrived at the club during the summer from Bemerton Heath Harlequins and has put in some energetic displays.
“We did well on Saturday,” he admitted. “Whilst we controlled the games for long periods, the conditions were difficult and our opponents were stubborn, so we had to remain patient and roll our sleeves up to battle it out.
“It was a good three points for us in the end, which keeps us up there very much in the mix.
“We’ve got a good changing room here. Coming into it over the summer, it’s clear that there is plenty of talent and ability here and the sky’s the limit for what we can go on to achieve this season.
“I am happy with how things have started from a personal point of view. If I can be in the top five for goals and assists this season, that would be a great achievement, but the main objective is to get this club back into Step 3.
“Division One South is even more competitive than it was last year. There are so many factors to overcome such as the travelling and the pitches. It’s an unpredictable League with everyone capable of beating each other, but it is noticeable to see how well the promoted teams are doing so far.
“Joining Winchester, I knew that expectations would be high. The club are determined to bounce straight back from relegation and I want to play my part in that. To win the title would be nice, of course, but if we have to do it through the play-offs then we will be ready for that.
“To be able to achieve anything, we have to keep chalking up the wins and we’ve got some tough games ahead which lead into the busy festive period, so the time ahead is going to go a long way in shaping our season.”
