Despite the miserable wet weather, there was plenty of drama across our four divisions on Saturday.
In the Premier South, leaders, Walton & Hersham, were denied victory by an equaliser deep into stoppage time by visitors, Bracknell Town. It meant that Gloucester City were able to close the gap as they beat in-form Weymouth 3-1 thanks to two late goals. Third-place Poole Town won by the same scoreline as they overcame the challenge of Hungerford Town.
Elsewhere in the top five, Gosport Borough and Chertsey Town shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw, whilst Farnham Town were left kicking their heels as their game at Taunton Town was postponed.
Over in the Premier Central, leaders, Spalding United, were made to work hard for their victory at AFC Sudbury as Jack Roberts’ goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to win the day. Just behind them, Harborough Town had their game at Bromsgrove Sporting postponed.
Third-placed Real Bedford came from behind to win 2-1 at bottom of the table Royton Town. There was no action for the other two teams that currently make up the top five as Quorn’s trip to Bury Town and Redditch United’s game at Kettering Town both fell victim of the wet weather.
Seven games were postponed in Division One South, including leaders, Frome Town’s trip to Falmouth Town. The 3G surface at Winchester City allowed their encounter with fellow high-flyers, Malvern Town, to take place and it was the hosts who went ahead against the run of play only for substitute, Jordan Annear, to head home a stoppage time leveller as honours ended even.
With Portishead Town’s game at Brixham AFC called off, it was a good day for Bishops Cleeve as not only did they beat Bashley 2-0, but Shaftesbury’s 3-0 reverse at Didcot Town meant that Bishops Cleeve moved into the top five.
Only two games survived in Division One Central. A commanding 3-0 triumph for Hertford Town over Rayners Lane saw them move in to fourth place. All three goals came during the opening period. The day’s other game saw Thame United win 5-1 away at London Lions to leave them one place and two points out of the play-off places.
