HUNGERFORD TOWN | GUIDING LIGHT

These are trying times for the Premier South club, but Joe Shepherd is giving his all

These are difficult days for Hungerford Town. The Pitching In Southern League Premier South club issued a recent statement which outlined their plight as steps have been taken to help secure their future.

The players rallied to secure a good 2-0 victory over Gosport Borough in their last home game at the end of January, but defeats in their last two away outings have left them just inside the bottom four as they prepare to host leaders, Walton & Hersham, at the weekend.

Described as ‘relentless and reliable’, Joe Shepherd is giving his all for the cause, displaying the kind of attitude that is needed during these trying times.

“We have a determined and honest group of players here,” Shepherd told us. “Injuries and suspensions are making life harder for us, having to play players out of position, but we take heart from our performance in our last home game where we really showed what we can do against a top five team.

“These are tough times, there is no doubt about that, but it has strengthened our resolve and increased the determination amongst us all.

“There’s a mix of youth and experience here and everyone is making a contribution, not just the players, but the staff, volunteers and fans are also stepping up to the plate and giving their all.

“Seeing so many players depart and also having a lot of games postponed hasn’t helped in being able to build momentum, but we have to roll our sleeves up and do everything we can to end the season strongly.

“For as long as I can remember, the Premier South has been a crazy League. It’s certainly not been any different this season; you’ve got zero games where you can drop your standards because if you do, any team is capable of handing out a hammering.

“It’s always good to have targets and we know that we are nowhere near where we want to be, but focusing on the next game is the key to building.

“Saturday’s game is as tough as they come against the League leaders, but we’ll keep fighting as a group and give it everything we’ve got.

“Yes, there are a lot of things going on off-the-pitch, but as players we have to focus on getting the points needed to move the club in the right direction up the table.”
