BRIXHAM AFC | BEING BRAVE

The Division One South club showed their battling qualities on Monday evening

It was quite a night for Brixham AFC on Monday.

Heading to Swindon Supermarine for their Pitching In Southern League Division One South encounter, their minibus suffered a blow out on the motorway.

It meant that they didn’t arrive at their destination until 8.20pm and half-an-hour later they were thrust into action against opponents who have started to find some form.

Things went from bad to worse when they fell behind just before the half-hour mark but they rallied to turn the scoreline on its head with two goals in quick succession midway through the second half before holding on to take a precious and hard-earned three points back to Devon.

As the players arrived home in the early hours of Tuesday morning, there was a real sense of achievement as they displayed the battling qualities that are going to be needed between now and the end of the season as they look to escape the clutches of the relegation zone.

“That performance showed our resilience and hunger for the three points,” said defender, Sam Gleeson. “It was a difficult journey to get there and you start to think that it’s going to be one of those days.

“But we managed to battle a burst tyre and the traffic to eventually get there and kick off at ten to nine.

“Given our position in the table, there is pressure going in to every game now as we need to get points on the board.

“As a team we are embracing the challenge and facing it head on. Our resilience and determination certainly came to the fore on Monday and it made winning the game even more enjoyable given the circumstances.

“I only arrived during the season, but it was clear for me to see straight away how focussed everyone is here on preserving the Step 4 status that the club worked so hard to achieve.

“This is a tough League with quality players and team, but everyone is capable of beating each other on their day which makes it very competitive.

“The aims and targets for us are simple as we look towards the run-in to the end of the season – to beat the drop. Monday’s result took us onto 20 points, so we need to be able to build on this now.”

There’s a big game ahead at the weekend as they head to Falmouth Town, who go into the game one place outside the bottom four and five points ahead of their Devon opponents..
