It was an afternoon that Winchester City won't forget in a hurry as they made the long trip down to Falmouth Town on Saturday.
Suffering at the hands of injury and unavailability, they would have been forgiven for thinking it wasn’t going to be their day when they went into half-time 4-2 down.
But the Pitching In Southern League Division One South outfit are made of stern stuff and fought back to claim all three points from a breathless 6-5 victory.
“It’s like a Sunday League scoreline,” said manager, Craig Davis, at the end. “I’ve never been involved in a game quite like that one. Where do you start in breaking it down and analysing what went on out there?
“One thing is certain and that’s the tremendous character and spirit we have within this group. People have written us off throughout the season, but once again we have found a way to win here, against a good side with plenty of attacking talent.
“That said, as much as it was nice to be part of a 6-5 win, I don’t want to be put through that every week!
“I read the riot act to the lads during the interval. It wasn’t a time for ranting and raving, it was more about addressing where we had going wrong, how we could get back into the game by doing something slightly different to counteract them and the spirit that was required.
“I am always positive and believe in my team and as a group we went out for the second half with plenty of belief and it ultimately paid off for us.
“What was particularly good to see was how, having gone 5-4 up, we were then pulled back to 5-5 yet we were still able to galvanise ourselves to go again and get the winner. This in itself speaks volumes for the character we displayed.
“It was a happy coach journey on the way home and now we have to take the positive elements from Saturday into the remaining games this season.”
The win leaves the club fourth in the table ahead of Saturday’s home game against Larkhall Athletic.
