It may not have been the way that the wanted to take the title following a home defeat, but Walton & Hersham have been worth winners of the Pitching In Southern League Premier South.
Monday’s 2-1 reverse at the hands of play-off chasing Chertsey Town was only their sixth defeat from 39 League games, during which they have amassed 91 points.
“It feels incredible to win the title with games to spare,” said Jack Wood, who has 35 outings to his name this term. “I am so pleased to have been part of it this season.
“It’s been a campaign to remember as it’s the first trophy that I have won in my career and it’s the most goal celebrations that I have managed to get in during a season!
“I think that the key point of the season was the comeback against Dorchester Town where we scored three times in stoppage time at the end to salvage a draw.
“From there we were able to go on a fantastic unbeaten run in both the League and FA Trophy, which gave us a real advantage as we went into the closing stages of the season.
“There are some very good teams in this division, so to have accumulated the points we have is credit to everyone involved.
“It’s one of those Leagues where if you are not right at it, you will get punished regardless of who you are up against.
“We’ve had a few occasions where we’ve been on the receiving end, but to have 29 wins to our name is good going and hopefully we can end with a few more over the next couple of weeks.”
A trip to Evesham United awaits on Saturday before their final home game sees them host Uxbridge. They end the season at second-placed Gloucester City.
