Cambridge City boss on his latest signings

Promotion prospects?

Ben Robinson - Cambridge City

Ben Robinson - Cambridge City

Robbie Nightingale has saluted the part Ben Robinson played in bringing his brother Joe to Cambridge City after signing the talented centre-back.

While Ben is no stranger to Lilywhites fans, having come through the club’s youth system before returning two years ago from Sudbury Town and being an ever-present since Joe this week joined City from Bishop’s Stortford.

The former Ipswich Town U18s and the U21s skipper has had spells with Woking, Boston United and St Albans in the National Leagues, but had no hesitation in dropping down to Southern League One Central with City.

“Joe was looking to leave Stortford, and the fact his brother is already here played a part in us getting him,” said manager Nightingale. “Ben alerted us to Joe’s situation, and we had to move quickly as other clubs wanted him, but thanks to Ben we were always one step ahead.

“Joe is a very good addition and comes with a good pedigree. He’s very composed, is good on the ball, reads the game well and is a good talker – he ticks all the boxes we look for in new players.”

With Ben being a right-back, Nightingale is looking forward to pairing up the brothers in his City back four. But the Lilywhites boss is also making moves at the other end of the pitch ahead of today’s league curtain-raiser against Corby Town.

With new signing Lewis Whitehead struggling with a thigh strain and James Hall unavailable – but due to playing on dual registration for Godmanchester Rovers last night – Nightingale has moved to bring in former Royston Town striker Josh Oyinsan.

“Josh is more of a target man in who has played at a higher level, and will give us a different dimension and more of a physical presence,” he said. “We haven’t scored as many goals as I’d like in pre-season, and we don’t want to rush Lewis back.

“James will be available for Wednesday’s trip to Barton Rovers though. I saw on social media that he had left us, which is nonsense. He’s only playing for Godmanchester on Friday night as he’s not available for us on Saturday.”
