Nearing the dream

Cambridge City has announced optimism that the initial vision for their new stadium at Sawston could be realised.

They revealed in July that they were having to explore alternative proposals to deliver the project within the agreed financial framework because of the rise of construction and development costs in the ensuing period since initial planning permission was granted in 2014.

It meant that some of the plans may have to have been tweaked or modified.

But in an update to supporters, they have explained that architects KWA Architect and Planning Consultants are providing project management expertise to the club and, having put the work on the ground out to tender, they have had positive feedback.

It includes one company that would build the entire ground and at a price close to the club’s original budget.

City is also hoping to pursue some grant applications for the stadium.

“Following the September board meeting we are now in a position to release this encouraging news,” said City’s stadium project director Terry Dunn.

“The recent quotations from building companies provide an excellent basis for us to move forward and I and others will be busy finalising details.

“There is still a lot of work to do to get the sequencing of the development right.

“Grants need to be applied for at the right time and there will need to be some effort in getting the application right first time so it is crucial we make use of external experts in this area.
