Basingstoke Bow Out of the FA Cup

Penalty shoot-out defeat for `Stoke.

The Pitching In Southern League lost another of its clubs in the Emirates FA Cup on Monday night as Division One South side Basingstoke Town were beaten by Isthmian League South East Division outfit Chichester City at Winchester.

The hosts took the lead after 33 minutes with a somewhat controversial goal when the assistant`s flag was raised for offside but the referee overruled him as he saw the ball flick off a Chi defender on its way to Brad Wilson, who went on to beat Steve Mowthorpe in the visitors` goal.

And then 10 minutes later, Basingstoke were awarded a penalty – and it was a double blow for the Sussex side as the decision also saw Rob Hutchings sent-off for the foul.

George Hallahan duly converted the spot-kick to make it 2-0.

However, crucially, the ten-men pulled a goal back in first half injury-time through Ryan Penny.

Basingstoke had several chances to increase their lead in the second half and then on 69 minutes, Chichester grabbed an equaliser through Josh Clack.

In the first minute of stoppage time, the home side had a great chance to win it but Wilson`s close-range header went the wrong side of the upright.

The final whistle sounded, and it was down to a penalty shoot-out.

Basingstoke`s Julian Schwarzer saved the first spot-kick but it was Chichester who went on to convert three to Basingstoke`s one, so, it`s they who will host Toolstation Western League Premier Division Cribbs in the First Qualifying Round next Tuesday.
