Tuesday night brought some joy and disappointment for Pitching In Southern Football League clubs in the Third Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The league has eight teams progressing into the next round with `upsets` and `shocks` in equal measure on the night.

Two big upsets came at Wimborne Town and Leiston.

Premier Division South side Wimborne knocked Vanarama National League South visitors Maidstone United out of the competition on penalties after conceding a last-gasp equaliser in normal time.

Charlie Seaman’s double on 29 and 52 minutes appeared to have sent the Stones through, but Charlie Gunson equalised on 38 minutes.

Maidstone missed a penalty when Scott Rendell was denied from the spot on 63 minutes.

And then Gunson scored his second of the night with 20 seconds of added time to play to force penalties.

The Magpies held their nerve in the shoot-out to win 3-1.

Premier Division Central side Leiston were another to knockout National League opposition in renowned cup fighters on North section AFC Telford United.

The visitors to the LTAA were unable to find a way past their battling hosts, despite putting them under pressure for the last 25 minutes of the game.

They also hit the woodwork twice within that spell but the game ended 0-0 and so had to go through a penalty shoot-out that went to a tenth round of kicks before Adam Walker’s effort was saved by Leiston `keeper Sam Donkin to give them victory by 9-8.

Leiston`s league rivals Tamworth, however, came unstuck at National League South Oxford City`s Marsh Lane.

Lewis Coyle put City in front after 33 minutes and they never looked back.

James Roberts doubled the home side`s lead just before half-time.

And Roberts won and converted a penalty 11 minutes into the second half to make it 3-0.

Harvey Bradbury back-heeled a fourth goal just after the hour-mark and he quickly struck again with a lob over Jaz Singh in the Lambs goal.

Josh Ashby hammered a sixth goal, before Jaanai Gordon claimed a consolation 3 minutes from time.

Division One South outfit Sholing caused an upset by beating Premier Division South side Walton Casuals down in Southampton.

The Boatman reached the Fourth Qualifying Round – due to be drawn on Thursday – for the first time in their history with a terrific 5-2 win against the team from a division higher.

It ended up being a long night for the 371 crowd as floodlight failure ended up delaying the first period into 98 minutes after which the teams turned straight round!

It was 2-2 at that time, with a brace from Stuart Green on 4 and 38 minutes for the hosts and Kyen Nicholas matching him in the 10th and 36th minutes.

But the break worked best for Sholing as Charlie Wagstaffe almost immediately restored their lead and then 7 minutes into the second period, Dan Mason made it 4-2, with Brad Targett adding a fifth in the 68th minute.

Premier Division Central side Alvechurch were also dumped out of the cup by lower league opposition in Northern Premier League Division One South East hosts Ilkeston Town.

The only goal of the evening at the New Manor Ground came a minute into the second half with a fine 25-yard effort from Ollie Brown-Hill.

However, the scoreline could have been a lot different but for the performances of the Robins` keeper Ross Durrant and his opposite number Jonathan Brown.

Isthmian League North Division side Bury Town also made home advantage count as they knocked out Alvechurch`s league rivals Nuneaton Borough at Ram Meadow.

Cemal Ramadan gave the Blues a 33rd minute lead that was doubled just 4 minutes later by skipper Ollie Hughes.

Boro`s former Middlesbrough star Leroy Lita was denied on more than once occasion, having an effort hacked off the line and a diving header brilliantly saved by Bury `keeper Joe Rose.

But their chances of getting back into the game virtually disappeared when they had defender Joel Kettle dismissed in the 86th minute for a second bookable offence.

Division One Central promotion favourites Halesowen Town and Division One South side Bristol Manor Farm also exited to outside opposition.

The Yeltz suffered a 2-0 defeat at Histon by Bury Town`s league rivals and former Southern League outfit, Cambridge City.

City got off to a great start when Mikey Davis put them in front after just 5 minutes.

And 6 minutes into the second half, Jarid Robson added the hosts` second which effectively killed off Halesowen`s chances.

Although Manor Farm lost on penalties in the end at The Creek against Isthmian League Premier Division visitors Cray Wanderers, it was a tie that gave the 392 crowd full value for money.

Ben Mundele gave Cray an early 6th minute lead that Freddie Parker doubled 5 minutes later.

Marcus Day immediately pulled one back for the home side only for Parker to make it 3-1 right on the stroke of half-time.

However, there was still time for the referee to reach for his notebook and pull out straight red cards for Cray`s Mundele and Manor Farm`s keeper Ben John after an altercation.

The home side had to bring on teenage goalkeeper Luc Rees, newly signed on `work experience` from Forest Green Rovers, and he played his part in helping his team make a great fightback.

Mitch Bryant pulled a second back just 7 minutes after the restart and then Leroy Vowles pulled Manor Farm level with 20 minutes to play.

But neither side could find a winner, so it was straight to penalties which Cray triumphed 4-2 in the shoot-out.

In ties involving all-Southern League sides, Banbury United edged out Premier Central Division rivals Peterborough Sports, again on penalties.

In front of a record crowd at the Bee Arena of 471, Connor Roberts put the visitors in front 10 minutes before the break.

And the Puritans stayed in front until the 80th minute when Jordan Nicholson levelled for the home side.

With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

Both teams were flawless with their first five spot kicks before Sports finally missed through Nicholson and Banbury edged it 7-6.

Premier Division South hosts Weston-super-Mare made no mistake as they took on Division One South side Larkhall Athletic.

Hat-tricks from Dayle Grubb and James Waite sent Weston through to Thursday`s draw.

Grubb opened his and the Seagulls` account after 16 minutes and then he doubled the tally from the penalty spot 6 minutes later following a foul on Kieran Thomas in the area.

Waite netted his first to make it 3-0 with 27 minutes gone on the clock and the tie was effectively over as a contest when Grubb completed a first half hat-trick in the 36th minute.

Waite went on to match his strike partner with goals in the 67th and then 2 minutes into stoppage time.

Just down the M5, Taunton Town beat Premier Division South rivals Truro City 4-2.

And this game also produced a hat-trick hero in the Peacocks former Wimborne Town and Dorchester Town striker Toby Holmes.

In front of a crowd of 584 at The Cygnet Health Care Stadium, Holmes took the home side into a 2-0 lead with goals in the 3rd and 18th minutes.

The White Tigers battled back to level before half-time through Alex Battle on 34 minutes and Ryan Brett just 2 minutes later.

But immediately after half-time, Holmes completed his hat-trick and on 53 minutes, Gethin Hill made it 4-2.

Southern Premier Division South sides Hayes & Yeading United and Hartley Wintney survived potential banana skins in home ties against Isthmian League South Central opponents.

However, Hayes & Yeading were forced to go to penalties after Chipstead held them to a 0-0 draw in normal time at the SKYex Community Stadium.

But the hosts held their nerve in the shoot-out to win 4-2.

The Row reached the Fourth Qualifying Round for the first time after coming back from a goal down at half-time to beat Barking 3-1.

Despite being the dominant side in possession stats, it was the Essex side who went into the break ahead, thanks to Isaac Westendorf`s 19th minute effort.

Crucially though, Hartley Wintney bounced back just 3 minutes after half-time, courtesy of an own goal from Barking defender Dan Flemming.

Two minutes later Lukas Burt put the Row in front for the first time in the tie and Sam Argent added a third just past the hour-mark.
