Hayes & Yeading Left Flying the Flag

A preview of Sunday`s Emirates FA Cup tie.

With Banbury United exiting the competition on Saturday, Premier Division South club Hayes & Yeading United are now the only other outfit left flying the Emirates FA Cup flag for the Pitching In Southern Football League.

Paul Hughes` side take on Carlisle United at the SKYex Community Stadium on Sunday with a 12.45pm kick-off.

The match is being screened live on BBC iPlayer and the Red Button.

Hayes & Yeading will be looking to add League Two Carlisle to their list of FA Cup scalps.

Former Chelsea and Luton player Paul Hughes has guided his team to wins over Margate, Bognor Regis Town, a penalty shoot-out victory over Chipstead and past Wealdstone to make the First Round.

Since being formed in 2007 as a merger of Hayes FC and Yeading FC, the club have reached the First Round on two previous occasions.

In 2010/11 they lost 2-1 at home to then-League Two side Wycombe Wanderers and just last season were beaten 2-0 at home by League One Oxford United.

Looking forward to the tie more than most will be winger Sanmi Odelusi, who played under current Carlisle boss Chris Beech at Rochdale in 2016.

The Cumbrians travel south in decent form, having beaten leaders Newport County 3-2 last Tuesday night to move up to fifth in the table.

Hayes & Yeading are mid-table and were victims of an `upset` themselves last weekend when Isthmian League South Central Division neighbours Uxbridge knocked them out of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

But in the FA Cup, they have beaten Isthmian Premier side Margate 2-1 away at Hartsdown Park in the First Qualifying Round, thanks to an Omar Rowe brace, hammered Margate`s league rivals Bognor Regis Town 5-0 at the SKYex, struggled past another Isthmian South Central outfit Chipstead only thanks to a penalty shoot-out but then created a `shock` by beating Vanarama National League new boys Wealdstone 2-0 at Grosvenor Vale.

Who`s Who?

HAYES & YEADING UNITED

Manager

PAUL HUGHES

He began his career with his local side, Chelsea, and started well, scoring on his debut against Derby County with an impressive solo effort. Thereafter, however, his career was stalled by injuries, successive managers' squad rotation policies and the signing of other midfielders like Roberto Di Matteo, Gustavo Poyet and Didier Deschamps.

Chelsea won the 1996/97 FA Cup, he was left out of the squad for the final but played in the quarter-final against Portsmouth.

The following year Chelsea won the European Cup Winners Cup (1997–98) and although he played in the earlier rounds of the competition, he did not make the squad for the final in Stockholm. Over the next three years he only featured in 24 more games for the club, and had loan spells with Stockport, Crewe and Norwich, scoring against Swindon Town.

He joined Southampton, then managed by his old Chelsea manager Glenn Hoddle, on a free transfer in the summer of 2000, but due to a lengthy groin injury and subsequent change of manager, left a year later having never played a game for the Saints.

His next club was Luton Town, where he remained until May 2006, making 88 appearances and scoring 7 goals for the club helping them gain promotion from League Two and become champions of League One.

In 2012, he was appointed joint manager at Kings Langley alongside Ritchie Hanlon.

The pair led Kings Langley to back-to-back promotions, finishing second in Spartan South Midlands Division One in 2014, and then winning the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division title in 2015.

Following a third consecutive promotion that saw Kings Langley become champions of the Southern Central Division and took the club to the Southern Premier Division and then Hughes, alongside Hanlon, moved to Hayes & Yeading United in November 2016.

Having been unable to stave off relegation in his first season and with Hanlon departing soon after due to personal reasons, Hughes took sole control of the side and led United to the play-offs in 2017/18 where defeat to Cambridge City denied United promotion.

Having switched to the Southern South Central division last season, Hanlon assembled a squad that took the division by storm hitting 129 goals and going up as champions with a 16-point cushion as the curtain came down on proceedings.

He showed some impressive form during the 2017/18 campaign and was re-signed by Paul Hughes for the following season's campaign. However, limited starting opportunities led to him cutting short his tenure by signing for Cambridge City in November 2018.

After missing the final part of last year’s abruptly ended campaign he returned looking to earn a regular place in Hughes' side for the 2020/21 season.

He was spotted by Barnsley, who snapped him up on a one-year deal, and he impressed with the development squad at Oakwell which caught the eye of Bradford City along the way.

An initial one-year deal took him to Valley Parade in May 2017, and he hit the ground running when he bagged the winning goal against Blackpool on his debut in the first game of the 2017/18 season.

His contract was extended to a three-year deal with the Bantams in August 2017 and he spent the first half of the 2018/19 campaign on-loan with Yeovil Town.

The 2019/20 term saw him team up with Wrexham for a loan spell where he scored 5 goals in his 7 starts for the Welsh outfit.

Experienced forward GAVIN REILLY became Carlisle’s third 2020 summer signing as he joined the Blues on a one-year deal in August.

The lively striker exploded onto the scene with Queen of the South scoring 43 goals in 132 appearances in all competitions during a five-year stay.

Loan spells with Gretna and Hearts preceded a permanent move to Tynecastle in the summer of 2015.

He had a loan with Dunfermline, before making the switch to St Mirren in July 2017.

A haul of 22 goals in 44 appearances captured the eyes of the scouts as the Saints earned promotion, and he signed for Bristol Rovers before heading on loan to Cheltenham for the first half of the 2019/20 campaign.

Carlisle secured attack-minded player GIME TOURE on a one-year deal IN August 2020.

A strong and mobile attacker, he began his career back in his home country of France where an eye-catching 2013/14 season for ES Viry-Chatillon earned him a trial with West Bromwich Albion.

He also played for La Roche, Brest B and Fontenay LCVF in Championnat National 2, Group D in his native country.

The lively front man returned to England in 2017 when he spent pre-season with Wrexham before going on to win a deal at eventual Conference champions Macclesfield Town.

He was with AFC Fylde for the first half of the 2018/19 season before ending the campaign at Sutton United, playing 41 games and hitting the net 7 times.

Forward MICAH OBIERO recently joined Carlisle on loan from Championship side Huddersfield Town until January 2021.

Since that time, the forward – who can play out wide and up front - has impressed in the youth set-up scoring goals for the under-19 and B teams.

On the final day of the 2019/20 campaign, he made his Huddersfield debut coming on against Millwall.

Walker has been at Deepdale since the age of 9 and was only 14 when he first made an appearance for the youth team.

Predominantly left-sided, he was top scorer in the under-18 side for two consecutive seasons and was confirmed as the club's 2019/20 scholar of the year in July.

History was made when he came off the bench in a home draw with Aston Villa in December 2018 - an appearance which made him the youngest ever player to represent the club in a league fixture.
