Boyd was a former Coventry City apprentice who represented the West Midlands and Coventry at schoolboy level.
A reliable and consistent right-sided defender, he had a short spell in Scotland with St Mirren during 1991 and played for the first team in a pre-season friendly before returning to the Midlands with Southern League Midland Division with Tamworth in November 1991.
He went on to enjoy successful spells with Hinckley Athletic, VS Rugby, who he helped to promotion to the Southern Premier Division, Atherstone United, Corby Town and Bedworth United.
